I am looking into joining AFROTC in the fall; however, since I will be a crosstown student; I will have the option of deciding between USC (Detachment 060) and LMU (Detachment 040). I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to pick the most suitable detachment?

I am currently a crosstown student about to graduate going to Detachment 060 at USC and I wouldn't have had it any other way. The majority of cadets here are crosstown students who commute from all over the area. It has a smaller number of cadets but that means you have a better chance of getting noticed by the cadre for your performance versus a larger detachment. The training is more intense than what other detachments have in the area (coming from what the other dets have said) and will better prepares you for Field Training later on. The campus is really nice too.

It depends on where you are commuting from and if you have a personal preference for one over the other. Cost can be a deal breaker as well. Once you become a POC cadet at det 060, the AS classes will cost more than LMU even though the cadre have worked tirelessly to lower the costs to a more reasonable level.

If you have more specific questions regarding detachment 060 feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to answer them!

Thank you for your reply! I would like to PM you; however, this function does not work because I do not have 10 post. Do you have to pay for AFROTC classes? I will be commuting from Irvine, while attending IVC.

You do not pay for AS class while you are a GMC cadet (first two years), but once you are a POC you do pay for AS classes (last two years). LMU is pretty much a straight shot up the 405 which is convenient if you're coming from Irvine. If you go to USC I still suggest taking the 405, but you then have to take the 110 which tends to have bit more of that LA traffic.

Okay thank you so much! I truly appreciate your help. Do you know if there is anyway we can PM?
