Random CIET Questions

I was just laying in bed and curious here about AROTC CIET...

I've been reading of some non-contracted cadets getting slots; are they still being paid to go by the government or are they going as a "volunteer"?

Also, my current roommate attended CIET last year and they PT'ed 4 times through the entire month, if anyone has input or experience are we allowed to use the base gym on down time? (Which I heard there is a lot of)

Thanks in advance!!

Another random CIET question. I am a rising freshman with a 3 year scholarship, will I go to CIET and if so when?

Ok, I'm glad y'all started this thread. My son is a 3 year winner (MSI). He's going to CIET. Does anybody know what prescription eyewear he needs? He's bringing home a packing list this weekend but if he needs BCGs, I need him to figure out how to get them. Insight would be appreciated.

It is up to you're Cadre and how many slots you're school is given. For my school only 3 MSI's are going, contracted only (4 year scholarship only) and a hand full of MS2's.
I have read on here that some non-contracted are going for other schools. This is only the second year of CIET so it's still kind of a mess.
I would talk to you're Cadre and express you're interest to them and see what they can do.

If you haven't heard anything yet - then it's probably safe to assume you probably won't be going. Not saying it's impossible for you to pick up a slot later on, but unlikely at this point.

Cadre up to this point (and HR) have been working to get everyone's packets and orders in line and squared away. All of that takes time. At least for us that is. Plus on top of that, you'd have to do paperwork to get those orders in place for you. So like I said, it's a bit of a process and if you didn't at the very least hear anything yet - you probably aren't going.

HR is putting the finishing touches on our packets now and we should be getting our orders next week.

That seems pretty accurate. CIET may turn out to be a good thing and good idea...someday. But not now. And returnees have provided varying reports of value.

Son is contracted MS1. Doing very well in excellent battalion. Told early that he was one of top picks for CIET. So he did not put in for CULP or Air Assault. Battalion number for CIET cut dramatically, as scuttlebut is Cadet Command reduced CIET cycles. 4 sets of orders later he is on standby. CULP and Air Assault are not available, and may not be available next year because of possible CIET as MSII. He is learning early on ways of the Army. Do not count on it until your feet are at the location. Ugh.

I'm piggybacking on this same question. DS is in the same boat. As of right now he is going to CIET, but he hasn't received his packing list yet (maybe he has, but he has orders to go around the middle of June). Nor has he ever received any gear. Is this typical for a 3 year winner? Also, does Ft. Knox issue gear if he is not contracted? Every picture I have seen of CIET everybody is in gear. Any clarification or similar stories to alleviate concerns would be great.

If your kiddo is going to CIET and has not received a packing list, he needs to talk to his PMS, HR person or someone else. When my DS went last year, there was someone (I think HR person) in charge of the plane tickets etc. His PMS passed out the packing lists and gear. However, he was contracted. I believe I heard that this year there are 2 packing lists floating around, 1 for non-contracted and 1 for contracted. Someone else should be able to chime in about that. Contracted cadets are typically issued some gear thru their battalion, and some at CIET. I don't know for sure about the non-contracted. Also, there are certain things of their own that they all have to bring, like underwear and socks, etc.

Hmmm that's strange. He should have received it by now, because cadre should be inspecting everyone's gear so they know that all cadets have everything ... last thing a cadet wants to have to do, is to run down to the PX spend their own money buying stuff they'll only be using for a couple weeks.

Our cadets going to CIET got their packing list a couple weeks ago. We just had our inspection last week, and reinspection (for those missing items on the list) this week.

To answer your other question. Pretty much everything should be issued to your DS by his program. He should not have to go out and buy things on his own (expect for things like personal belongings) - but all of the Army gear/equipment should be provided for.

Was he the only one who hasn't gotten the packing list yet? Either way - he needs to get the ball rolling with cadre and see why he hasn't gotten the list yet.

This is the packing list for non contracted cadets for the upcoming CIET. I was told that most of the gear will be issued by your school.

Looking at the above packing list for non-contracted cadets, I see that it does not include boots. I am thinking that if you already own boots, you may want to take them, as the ones you will be issued there will not be broken in. Also, the socks issued for those boots may or may not be to your liking, so if you have boot socks you have been wearing, take them. Gold Bond powder is nice to take along too....

Talked to DS this morning and he has the exact list as provided above by lifeofhonor (thank you). The way he explained CIET is that he will be getting gear at Ft. Knox. He is giving me a hard time since he has been asking these questions already. Just find it weird that his school would not take care of the gear ahead of time since he will contract right away come Fall (3 year scholarship). So soccmomer and I are thinking the same. We need to get boots as well as socks. Still don't get the glasses part. Are any glasses ok.

What do you mean? Are you referring to that packing list - if so, I must have missed it; I don't see anything on the list about glasses.

Anywho I'm assuming you are referring to one of two things.

Prescription glasses: AR 670-1. The long and short: has to be one full solid color, I don't remember what the authorized colors are, but I know black is one of them. Like anything in the Army - NO logos. That's the general criteria.

Safety glasses: find ones that are APEL approved. I go shooting frequently, so I have an actual decent set -- Crossbow by ESS. Oakleys are good too .... but there's so much hype (and associated cost). Nothing wrong with Oakleys, but I prefer the look of Crossbows to Oakleys any day, and ESS products are a bit cheaper too.

Hope this helps.

Yes to your first assumption. He wears contacts 75% of the time, the other times it is the glasses. I have seen in the CIET Cadet Command pictures those that are wearing glasses are black but are they army issued or does one just have to make sure they glasses are AR 670? I'm assuming the latter. Last question for a complete newbie, does one wear their prescription glasses or contacts at CIET is there some sort of requirement that if one needs corrective eye-wear during this type of training one wears glasses? Thanks Thompson and good luck to Hackenberg and the Jets.

Same question. Do they have to wear glasses? If DS wears contacts, is that okay? I noticed that he has safety glasses in the stuff they packed up for him at the battalion. He was told nothing about bringing glasses.

In the field training environment contacts are a hassle. Sometimes they are allowed, sometimes not.
There will be a time when glasses are needed at some point in ROTC/training (ex. Air Assault disallows contacts completely).
I am picking up a pair soon for this summer myself.
