Football days with your plebe

My wife and I would like to attend a home football game, preferably early in the season, and be able to spend time that day with our plebe son. We would like to avoid the crowds of parents weekend, so would like to do it on a different game day. If we picked a game randomly, will we be able to spend any time with our son that Saturday? Or the following Sunday?

Every home football weekend is crowded, a snick or two under Commissioning Week, I-Day, PPW levels. Hotels fill quickly.

The annual Fall Boat Show fills the town to overflowing for two weeks in October.

Plebes have town liberty after the game ends. They sit with the Brigade and are in a duty status until after Blue and Gold is sung. They normally have to be back at a set time that night. There is the possibility of an "overnight" being announced at the game itself. If your DS does not have the duty that weekend (he should know his duty schedule just before start of ac year), he can be out in town. Sunday, he can see you on the Yard.

Sep/Oct games have the best weather, and the town will be crowded with reunion classes, which happens at every home game, not just the dedicated Homecoming game. Nov games can be chilly and rainy.

PPW does give the plebes a whole lot more time off-Yard (parts of Fri, Sat, Sun, no overnight, typically) and their first real break since I-Day. They also don't have the stresses of ac year yet.

Pick the wrong fall football game prior to an academic reserve period, and DH may tell you he won't have time to get anything done on Sat since he was with you and had the game, so he has to spend Sun getting a paper done, doing problem sets, prepping for a lab or studying for 6-week exams, and can't see you except for a lunch break on Sun if you bring him Chipotle. You can see the ac calendar on the USNA.edu public calendar site.

If you don't go for PPW, rest assured, someone will take pity on him and get him off the Yard. He will have met his sponsor family the previous Sunday. We rescued many a plebe whose family didn't make it. A roommate's family may adopt him.

Capt, it looks like your reply was perhaps for USNA, rather than USMA. Does your answer apply to USMA too?

I apologize - not much sleep last night - and did not take care. Time to put the iPhone down for a nap. Or maybe me. We have two USNA '10 daughters visiting with fiancés, plus a '17 mid and her mid BF, for the weekend. We were up late talking, sharing sea stories and catching up, and I was up at 0530 prepping a serious brunch for 0830 before they all scattered for the day.

WP folks can give you good insight. I would speculate football game weekends are crowded, for same reasons - reunion classes. There will also be ac year pressures, depending on where they are in the semester. How time off works on game day and Sunday, I am sure you will get good info soon.

No problem. Appreciate you responding anyway.

...now get some sleep brother.

:)
I did, thank you. Nothing like watching a boring movie with your eyes closed.

Nothing like a good nap. Now that you are well rested, can you explain why there is noone on the USMA forum except Navy folks? I can't get anyone from West Point to answer my question.

Apologize for being rude... I am hanging out over here because it is kinda quiet over at USNA forum.
USMA forum regulars must be busy watching the draft.

Nothing rude at all. Glad someone here.

You left the door wide open, brother...

The sad state of NO Army football fans left on the forum?! :D
The sad state of NO Army football fans left, period?!

I know I am really bored and pushing it...:D

Why did I suspect there would be a football jab in response?

My kid is in the WP 2020 class. The streak ends on Dec 10.
I wonder how many WP parents said that since the first of the last fourteen loses?

May the better team win. See you at the game.

I'll be sitting in the section above the Cadets of West Point.

...and I don't care if the best team necessarily wins; just as long as Army wins.

Tell your plebe nothing bad happens when West Point loses.:D

I met a West Point grad Major (O-4). He told me his plebe year was the last time Army had won! I actually think the streak is ridiculous. It puts too much pressure on both teams.

You actually have @Capt MJ and @NavyHoops, two of the most dedicated and helpful people, active on the forum on this quiet Saturday afternoon.
I understand, and am delighted they are here. My point was there doesn't seem to be any USMA folks today on this USMA thread, and I still don't know if I will be able to see my plebe Saturday or Sunday after a home football game. Hope I can though, as I just ordered two tickets for the game against Rice, and booked a hotel for Friday and Saturday nights.
