Waiver request for one already participating in AROTC

DS was evaluated for delayed puberty and short stature while a sophomore, and was treated by an endocrinologist for that as a junior and senior in high school. The treatment included about 9 months of prescribed HGH shots. He participated in varsity soccer, and a club sport while senior and he is quite physically active. His treatment ended in late September of his senior year, and he has been off the medication for 12 months. He has a clean bill of health from his family doctor and his endocrinologist and they cleared him to participate in AROTC in college.

He has been working with his AROTC unit in college for a few weeks now, and he is thriving. He had an good APFT score this summer, and he improved his score by 50 points earlier this month. He believes he had the 2nd or 3rd best score of 25 freshmen. My question is what needs to be done to obtain a medical waiver so he can contract and start to receive his scholarship benefits. He has a 3 yr AD scholarship, and the school will waive his tuition during the first year once he is eligible to contract. My understanding is that the only thing in his way is the medical waiver. DS sent his medical records and some supporting letters from soccer coach, etc. in May, but has not heard anything about the waiver.

I thought I read something on this forum about the process for a medical waiver for cadets that had been injured or diagnosed with a condition AFTER they contracted, and that the battalion should make the request for the waiver. My understanding is that CC automatically considers a waiver for AROTC scholarship winners, 4 yr or 3yr, because they are not part of a battalion. DS is now part of a battalion, and my question is does his battalion need to send in a "Request for Cadet Action" Form 131-R for CC to consider whether to grant a medical waiver? His DoDMERB portal used to show that they received material DS sent in early May, but that entry was removed in August. That makes me wonder whether CC simply "took him out of the line" since he was going to be part of a battalion that fall.

Any insight would be welcome.

If I read your post correctly as a scholarship recipient he already had his DoDMERB exam and was DQd, in May they (AROTC) started the waiver process.

If that is correct you will just have to wait until they review his records.

He could ask his unit to contact HQ to see where his file stands. I know for AFROTC a cadet could call HQ at maxwell and talk to a rep to find out. If that is the case I would have him contact HQ AROTC first before asking the unit. If he gets nowhere with HQ than when he approaches the unit he can at least illustrate to them that he took control of the issue before asking them for assistance.

They did not remove him from the system because he was part of the battalion, but because he is part of the class of 28, and they clear their portals at a certain time.

PS Beware the DoDMERB exam is valid for 2 years. If he had his exam in the summer of his rising senior year, and cannot convert the scholarship to a 3.5 his exam could fall out before the fall and he will need a new exam, and will repeat the waiver process. I.E. took the exam August 26,2013. School starts and contracting is August 27th his exam is no longer valid

Hello, I'm having almost the same exact issue. I received a 4YAD for AROTC and was DQ'd for "Pituitary Dysfunction" although my only diagnosis was short stature, which is now corrected. I was diagnosed with short stature as a sophomore in high school and took HGH until the end of my junior year. I played sports all four years and did extremely well. I'm looking to get a waiver so I can participate in AROTC this coming fall at college. Could you provide me with some guidance as to what documents you provided to CC and what type of things you said. My physical performance is of no issue as my PFT was a 6:56 mile, 56 pushups/minute, and 64 sit-ups/minute. Also, I've reached my height potential and my endocrinologist can confirm that there is no more need for medication

Normally, All treatment records are needed along with diagnoses and prognosis. The only person who will be able to give you an exact list of what is needed is the one reviewing your case.

Well I know that I have to submit all medical records that have to do with the issue but I've also seen people who submitted personal statements and letters of recommendations along with the records. I'd like to see what this person said to find things that triggered CC to change their mind about this DQ which is apparently something they don't do very often.

Unfortunately, the original poster does not appear to be active on the forum anymore. It looks like their last post was 10/2014, so chances are they will not see your question to respond. There are other posts on here about waivers and submitting documentation. The condition may be different than yours, but maybe their experiences will be helpful. Good luck!
