I'm a plebe who is about to get recognized. Ask Me Anything.

How are the interactions between upperclassmen and prior service in your class?
Im also going to be doing a year at Prep, so I'm going to be as old as the seniors when I'm a freshman..

The priors are treated with a lot of respect by the upper classmen. They'll teach you how to survive at the academy, but even upperclassmen will look to you for advice in certain situations.

What does recognition mean at USMA? I know at USAFA they do a 3 day thing, so is there something similar at USMA?

What items do you wish you would have brought to CBT? Also, which items did you have your parents bring on Acceptance Day?

I am a current plebe, too. For Beast, foot powder saved my life. I recommend getting some Fox River socks because they are thick and comfortable. Combination of these socks and foot powder prevented me from getting any blisters. For A-Day, get your family to bring you some snacks and maybe an iron for your uniforms.

Thank you! I'll make sure to bring extras! Did you get "free time" on Sunday's during CBT?
Yes, Sunday mornings you get time to go to services and Sunday night is chaplain's time. This was my favorite part of beast, because you get to go hangout with all of your friends and eat food without upperclassmen there.

Thank you both for taking your time to answer questions!

We are instructed to bring court shoes. What are they exactly used for? I know they recommend having a white leather upper and say non-running shoes. But, I have seen people on the Facebook page posting pictures of Nike running shoes that don't have any leather and they are "approved". What kind should I buy?

Sneakers - you need to bring two types with you. 1. Court shoes which must be leather and predominately white. 2. Running shoes (sneakers) - these do not have to be white. Get quality running shoes since you'll be using them quite a lot.

The running shoes don't need to be white?

Court shoes won't be used during beast. They are for mil move and boxing. I highly recommend you do not buy the cool Nikes everyone will want. They will get destroyed by the rope climbs in mil move. Instead buy one of the less cool old man that holds up well.

I wonder if you are familiar with the recent "Ask me Anything" thread by an upperclassman here, and whether you tended to agree or disagree with his seemingly bored view of the USMA.
He shared a lot of info and I know he was being honest so that's not a criticism of him, but I am curious to hear whether you'd guess that was a majority or minority opinion held by other cadets.
Is the whole USMA thing above or below your expectations so far?

If you reread the packing list memo you will note that there is no mention of a required color for the running shoe. There is however a mention of color for the court shoes.

Last year they asked for predominately white running shoes but they did not this year. Finding mostly white running shoes was almost impossible, so my guess is that this is why they (thankfully!) dropped this requirement this year.

I'm prior service recently accepted into USMAPS. I have a full sleeve and just wanted to know if it will give me any real issues?

How many times did you get off campus this past year and when you did get off campus did you go anywhere cool and stay overnight? What type of people did you see get off campus the most for free time (D1 athletes, certain club, etc)?
