CSM counseled on appearance following social media firestorm

Relevant to our family as our daughter practices " the bun" !! I am sure there will be other comments regarding leadership, accountability, social media, and pride.

Thanks for sharing! This was really interesting and I will share with my daughter too. She feels like she has an advantage after 13 years of dance! She has lived in all types of buns the majority of her life.

We had a girl when I was in basic training who had hair to her rear and she would have Fire Guard wake her up an hour early so she could wash her hair and bun itI had the barer cut my hair to super short so I wouldn't have to do anything.

Amazing how easily some draw attention to "out of reg" conditions of a female for one thing but not another. Only a month or so ago, a prominent picture of a very high ranking female, in full dress blues, was posted in the news with diamond earrings (not allowed) that were easily 2 - 3 times the diameter allowed. Never heard a peep about that being out of reg.

I think the difference was the CSM had established a pattern of behavior regarding her own 670-1 violations, while punishing soldiers for the same thing. There was more than just an out of reg bun and horrible make-up going on here.

I'm not familiar with the officer or the diamond earrings you refer to, but my guess is that officer did not blatantly parade around in them after being told not to, was not counseled for wearing them, and didn't punish soldiers under her for also wearing them. Not to say she was right - but there are degrees of transgressions and these two situations aren't the same.

It wasn't just the hair out of regulations it was the black pumps in service uniform that appeared to have greater than 3" heels. Many describe them as stilettos.

Diamond earrings are authorized for females with the service, dress, and mess uniforms - just less than 6mm and unadorned. AR670-1

Thank you. I stand corrected on earrings. You'll have to excuse me for thinking back to the old 35-10 AF reg, the new one, AFI 36-290, allows for diamonds. I had also recently read the USAFA rules, which are much stricter - pearl, silver, or gold only not more than 1/8" diameter, after BCT.

I'll let you decide:

...the old "do as I say, not as I do". I recall when our squadron performed weekly 35-10 inspections, the flight chiefs would never call out a female airman on hair conformance. I feel they were just uncertain how to interpret the regs for females. It never failed that every week, I, as the OIC, would be the one to address the out-of-reg hair cuts or fashions and then tell the flight chiefs so they could tell their female troops. We only had about 4 females out of 150 troops. So, I was not surprised the men were not as well versed on the regs for the women.

^ Not only that, but there's a definite perception, true or not, that calling out female soldiers, especially black females, is asking for an EO complaint. I know folks who just ignore it, instead of making spot corrections for that reason alone.
