I was wondering how hard is it to play a varsity level sport at the academy, and still do extracurricular activities. For example, playing baseball and being on the Combat Arms Team is it possible to do both?

Thank You!

Speaking as a current Mid,
It's possible to do Varsity sports with extracurricular activities such as volunteering through the Midshipmen Action Group, a religious ECA, or some side program like that. The two team that you're asking about are both full time team that demand all of sports period (and then some extra) to be a part of. So to answer your questions, no you wouldn't be able to do both the Combat Arms Team and Baseball together.

Also the Combat Arms Team is VERY selective in who they take. You can only join the team as a plebe and there's multiple rounds of try-outs starting with some 60 plebes and only maybe 3-5 make the team. So just something to consider as well.

Thank very much for your reply! Would it be possible to do baseball and join the Scuba Club or the Infantry Skills Team? Do these activities not take as much time as the Combat Arms Team would?

Thank You!

So with regards to Baseball and...
Scuba Club = Yes, since they only can do weekend dives and trips. And you don't have to go on every dive/trip to be apart of the scuba club.
Infantry Skills Team = No, they're a full time team and just as selective as a team as the Combat Arms Team.

If you're looking for a ECA/club that involves shooting and basic infantry tactics that would also work with Baseball, I would look at the Semper Fi Society. They occasionally do shoots, fly people down to Camp Lejeune on Ospreys for a weekend of Marine Corps activities every semester, and have monthly combat speakers. Even if you aren't currently looking at Marines as your service assignment, it would worth a look.

Hope this helps.

Don't forget that during the spring baseball is very busy with practices and games (especially on the weekend). It might be hard to do both, varsity sport and ECA, when baseball is in season...not sure what the routine is off season.

I wouldn't worry so much on what you can and can't do at this point...once you are there, you can figure out what you can and can't handle. As gonavypro has pointed out...some are more challenging than others.

Okay, thank you for your help!

Agree with everything said. As a basketball player I had very little time. Basketball is one of the longer seasons and takes nearly the entire year. But don't forget as a team they do many things. We ran clinics and volunteered with youth all the time. I was in Semper Fi and attended things when I could. I also did mountaineering club as my best friend was a huge part in establishing it. I would do some things with them in the off season.

That's a good point. Thank you for the help!
