might be a stupid question, but its wiser to ask than to stay ignorant. Can somebody clarify if we are allowed TV's/Gaming consoles after CBT? Any thoughts on what personal items are allowed in our rooms as plebes and beyond?

Even if you were allowed, shouldn't you take advantage of other activities?

It's company dependent, but most plebes do not have gaming consoles. No TVs. Most people, for their one person electronic item choose a keurig. I agree w/ Padre...go out and join a club. While you will have some time for Netflix, you have a tough academic load and a very, very scheduled out day. Weekends are only slightly better.

When I was talking to my RC he said that he had a gaming console in his room second semester if that helps

My DS has his personal gaming computer and a second monitor. He watches Netflix on the iPad he was required to get (doesn't sound like he uses it for anything academic).

Wow, with Hurricane on this one. You need time to decompress and zone out. You can't survive USMA without finding your thing to turn off the brain and relax some. Everyone has their favorite show or two they want to keep up with. Once you get to USMA you will learn what is allowed. Even if TVs are allowed, I am pretty sure they aren't as a Plebe. Especially since USMA doesn't have a lot around, you may choose to play a game or watch a movie on a weekend. It's good to develop strict habits on this stuff from day 1.

I never heard of anyone that had a TV when DS was at WP. His Company rooms always had a TV which seemed to be mainly used for watching football games.

He was allowed to have a game console 2nd semester Plebe year. I cringed a little when he took his Xbox to WP after Christmas thinking - well, there go the grades - but I didn't say anything. It was allowed and it was his choice. He continued to do fine academically. He later told me that it was his stress reliever.

I don't think West Point would have been as tolerable for him without Xbox and Netflix.

I disagree with some of these, a gaming station is fine if your company allows it. People hook it up to their computer monitors usually. It's a good way to get to know your classmates if your stuck on post for a weekend. Sometimes there will literally be nothing else you can do or want to do so its good to have a getaway. Hope this helps.

Hobbies and fun are strictly banned.

Definitely banned. No fun for anyone.

But seriously - no TV's. There's a limitation to the size external monitor you can have which you can ask your TL when you get there if you really, really want a new one than the one you'll be issued. Gaming consoles, manage your time properly and you'll be fine. They generally aren't allowed until second semester for plebes. I graduated top five percent of my class, played video games, and watched Netflix and also had a life when it came to hanging with friends and sports. It can be done. Time management is key.
