Hey everyone,

I was accepted into AIM and I'm aware that they take into account multiple things and part of it is a lottery. I have a 28 ACT I was wondering if this will be good enough for appointment or if I should try and go for a 30?

Since you are in competition with other applicants, the question is similar to "how fast should I run the 100m race?" Always strive to improve anything you have control over.

Ditto what "physicsguru" says.
While it is probably good enough to be considered for an appointment, why give other candidates an advantage to get the appointment? Understood that if this is truly a candidate's best score and the saved study time can be used to strongly improve other aspects of the application then that might make sense to live with a 28.
Nobody knows at this time what the scores of next year's class will be. Others have posted recently how they ended up in CGAS but were told that in a prior year they would have got an appointment.
At end of day, I would prefer to say "I did my best to get in" whatever the outcome.

DD had a 30 ACT and was a recruited athlete for CGA.

DD was given an LOA by AFA and LOE by USMA. (She ultimately chose USMA).

We thought she would be a shoe in for CGA but was given a CGAS slot. The point being - every year is different. It is impossible for anytone to say "this will get you in..." Keep pressing forward with your grades, leadership and ACT/SAT. The only thing you can control is "you." Its easier said than done, but don't worry about those things you can't control. It used to drive me nuts when I would read people saying to keep taking the ACT until you get a 36. But, its totally true. Keep taking it and keep trying to improve yourself which is all you can do.

It does not hurt you to take the ACT or SAT multiple times. Remember CGA "super scores", and the CCEB only sees the top scores, not how many times you take either test. If you can afford to take the ACT again, do so. You may also want to take the SAT and see which one you perform better on.

As many have said, you want the best score has said and the answer to your question is almost impossible to answer as every year is different. For example, I had a 31 ACT and was not accepted, but there were many other factors to my application that were considered.

jebdad is spot on. DS had a 30 ACT composite with a 34 in math and 32 in English and a superb all around application. He received appointments to USNA, USMA, USAFA with an LOA to USMMA...but was waitlisted at USCGA. Every year is different, but I would not feel secure with a 28 ACT unless you have some sort of critical "x factor" like being a recruited athlete for a badly needed sport and position.

Son did not get into AIM this past year and we thought it was due to his 29 ACT at the time. He was pretty discouraged because at the time CGA was his clear 1st choice. Flash forward to November and he receives a very early call with a full appointment offer under EA,mthe day after he did the Cade for a day program. ...he still had the 29 on his application. He was not a recruited athlete. He then improved his composite a few points and received appointments to 2 other academies and eventually chose USMA. To make a long story short, we truly believe admissions when they say that they look for the complete candidate. He excelled in leadership, sports and community service and he knew that he needed to be better than most in these areas to make up for a not-so-stellar ACT. Yes, take the ACT as many times as you can or can afford but don't forget the other areas as well.

My DD has these ACT scores:

English 35
Reading 34
Science 28
Math 28

Are theses good enough or should she take the September ACT? Thank youm

I forgot to mention she has a 4.0 GPA. And is in the top 5% of her class of 600.
