I've been informed I have an hour luncheon with MG Hughes in a few weeks. Are there any burning questions/comments people have about the direction of ROTC (that won't result in a GOMAR)?

I am wondering about the future of the branching process.
We have seen indications that aptitude may play a larger role.
Does that mean that Cadets will be given a selection of branches, based on aptitude, that they will then rank in order of preference?

I had a similar question for the General. It seems as if the "scholar-athlete-leader" model has become "STEM-just pass the PT test-who cares about land nav..."

CIET seems to be a waste of time ,money and resources. What is its future?

+1 @sheriff3
Ditto on CIET. Those funds could be better used at the battalion level perhaps. It would also help to get a clear definition of WHO should attend CIET. Even the CC website is vague on who is to go.
Originally ALL MS-II's were going tp CIET, and now it seems only those who missed the MS-I year only need to go.

Not really. I did all four years and I never attended CIET (2000-2004).

Edit: I think I read your post wrong. Nevermind...

Suffice to say, the criteria for CIET seems unclear. Thanks, Doc!

I guess that would be the big question, is cadet training going to be re-vamped again or is the current CIET/CLC model going to remain in place for a few years.

There are a lot of people on this forum that want to help prospective cadets and answer questions but really can't due to the unknown.
The best advise anymore is to just show up to your school prepared for anything and listen to what they tell you and it might be accurate until someone changes their mind.

And I agree, even telling them to be in the best physical shape possible doesn't seam to mean that much. It might catch someone's eye but may not amount to much in the overall scheme of things.

This is so true. Spoke to a Capt. in my son's Battalion just before commissioning. He remarked how much the curriculum had changed for my son's MSI class since 2012. He seemed to think that there was more change coming...semper gumby.

What is CC position on contracted scholarship winners enrolling for a semester abroad as part of their studies? It seems some schools allow it to occur, while other schools state it is not allowed. The position, whether it is allowed or not, needs to be communicated more effectively.

@BigBillNY Google Cadet Command Reg 145-1. Chapter 9 clearly spells out the requirements for study abroad for contracted cadets. I'd hate for @MabryPsyD to ask a question easily found in the regs.

I would be curious to know the thoughts of the the new CG regarding the accessions of below the line cadets from SMCs'. I realize GC has no/ very little control over this as it is a federal law.

That's a good question. I honestly haven't seen a difference (career wise) between an ROTC grad and an SMC grad. These past few years, I've seen USMA medical officers passed up for MAJ. Stellar performers too.

While it is in the regs, I know two individuals (at different schools) who were told that it wasn't allowed. These MS II/III's were not about to quote regs to their cadre. I think it is more of mindset issue with some of the PMS and their staff. Who knows? Maybe they don't know what paperwork needs to be done and it is easier to just say no to the request.

I think this inconsistency in application of the CC Regulations and Policy across brigades and even within the brigades would be a great topic to ask the CG. Study abroad, payment for travel to school for 4 year scholarship cadets, military and non military internships (stem, engineering, medical), documents for transition to AD, drug testing cadets, and submission of Ed Delay packets all have significant inconsistencies between battalions in the same brigade and between brigades. It is not based wholly on the changeover of Cadre. These inconsistencies in application of the regulations and programs impact the cadets as they transition to officers.

Ask him if they can take the CIET money from one session and retrain every HRA at every battalion and then audit their work product - Some of these HRA's are great, some don't care, and others are just not competent and should be fired. OK - you will have to wordsmith this one. Maybe ask if the battalion audit results that are supposed to be conducted as part of their current processes can be published openly for public viewing.

In reference to audits, I thought ROTC battalions are audited every year (MacArthur Awards, etc).

Audits are only good as they are designed, their results analyzed, and changes to policies are implemented as needed. For example, many audit formats start out with a general topic question and then require additional answers, as needed, depending upon the prior responses. "Did you have any students participate in a study-abroad program? If yes, answer the next set of questions. If no, move onto the next section."

I think the point that AROTC Parent and I are trying to make is that there are numerous issues that vary from battalion to battalion that impact learning/training opportunities. One only needs to look at this forum and the ARTOC-REDDIT discussions to see examples of how things are done differently across the country. There needs to be more consistency and AROTC Parent's suggestion that the HR personnel be retrained is a great idea.

I am not familiar with the audit method that leads to the MacArthur Awards. However, it is unlikely all Battalions are audited/reviewed every year or even on a scheduled cycle. If they are, the audit/review is ineffective or corrective actions are poor. It does not have to be 100% annually, just audited/reviewed and corrective actions taken.
