Excused absence for NASS required by high school

Please accept my apologies if this was already posted in a thread or as a topic. I searched for it without results.

My DD was accepted for NASS and was even more ecstatic to get her first choice,
Summer Session 1 (June 4-9).

She is a transfer student from a private school to the public school district and things are done very differently there….. She recently had to meet with her guidance counselor to confirm her upcoming fall courses and her counselor mentioned she would need “letter head stationary” from NASS stating she is attending the Summer Session and time frame so it could be an "excused absence".

How does she go about doing this?

Who would we contact for their requirement?

Any help and being pointed in the right direction would be most appreciated.

Thank you!

Call USNA Admissions, who administers the NASS program. This can't be a first. Be prepared to fax/email scan of a draft of the desired letter.

Thank you! I will do that. This high school is kind of hostile to deal with. For example if she has an Orthodontist checkup and I walk her in late, I also have to have a signed note from her Orthodontist stating she was there and the time she was there on their stationary. A note from me or my physically walking her in is not acceptable! Sigh...

Thank you again!

They will not be open Monday due to holiday. Get them first thing Tuesday.

Meanwhile, I would email them per link, with a Word doc attached to email they can use to minimally edit and paste to letterhead, get signed, scan or fax back to you. Call them Tuesday around 10, to see if they have seen it and routed it.

Work this until you have a live body who has taken responsibility for the action. The week after Comm Week/Mem Day is a popular week to take leave for civilian and military staff. The USNA Yard is a ghost town, comparatively, the first 3 weeks after graduation and before Plebe Summer. Just because your email gets routed to the proper person does not mean that person is at their desk.

Do you need the letter before she attends? When DS went to NASS they had preprinted forms on USNA letterhead that you could pick up when you registered. It could not have been any easier. You will not be the first with this type of request. They see it all the time. They also get a certificate of completion that may also meet DD school's requirement.

As a side note my DS school district would only authorize 2 days as excused for a "college visit". The remaining days were recorded as unexcused. In the overall scheme of things it did not make any difference. I was, and I still am ,disappointed with my school distracts indifference to the value of the military academies summer programs and their unwillingness to treat it as an unexcused absence.
