This is the new meningitis vaccine and requires 2 doses at least 30 days apart. The PTR said it was recommended, but not required - but may be mandated upon arrival (waiting on a CDC recommendation).

I know a 1/2 dozen kids that have received it, and every one has complained of very sore arms lasting 3 to 5 days after each round. A couple had mild reactions (flu-like symptoms for 24-48 hours).

I have heard from some that in some locations the Bexsero vaccine is in short supply, so may not be an option, but based on the limited sample size I am aware - I would recommend getting the first dose prior to I Day. (DD was able to complete both rounds)

Not a doctor, but Plebe Summer is enough of a hassle without a sore arm and though if sick will be well cared for - it's a lot better to be home sick than in Mother B.

I had the first dose of Bexsero a little over a month ago, and my whole shoulder was VERY sore(I mean barely being able to move it sore) for 2 days after the dose, however I had no other symptoms. I am getting the second dose today, and hopefully it won't pain quite as much.

If the first shot can be given prior to reporting, but there is not enough time for the 30 day wait period for shot 2 will they know to only give them the 2nd dose(thinking second dosage is different than first)( update shot record)?

Thanks for the heads up on this!

If you bring the updated shot record (or a note from your doctor) showing round 1 was completed, that should be sufficient proof to USNA that only the second round is needed.

I would also suggest that if a large number of Bexsero vaccinations are given out on I Day and the 'very sore' arm reaction is common. The training cycle will be updated to take that into account. I am just reporting that for the limited amount of folks that I am aware that took the shot - all suffered for a few days with very sore arms, so if you can get round 1 completed in advance of I Day.....

Thanks!

DD is going to CGAS I am pretty sure they are in line to get the shot too but will only have 3weeks. I am figuring it is not much time with in their training cycle to give them a couple of days to recoup. You are right to recommend we should at least think about getting the first shot before hand. When I was thinking about this shot a few months ago I was only thinking about a fever type of reaction I didn't know about having a bummed arm for a few days. Bummed armed fever that would really stink during plebe, swab, or scholars first week.

Lol she is not going to be happy with her Friday to do list....lol, rofl.

Our primary dr. does not offer and we have to jump through hoops to get at local university hospital. Has anyone had luck with finding at pharmacy "minute clinics?"

I checked many local pharmacies (CVS, Costco, Walmart, etc.), doctors offices, and minute clinic, none carried. The only option I found was a passport travel health center an hour away with a cash cost of over $250 plus visit (doesn't take insurance). Opted to let DS get it on I-day.

Just FYI if anyone is pursuing -- I did find at a Walgreen's (if you are in CT, the only Walgreens in the state that has it is Glastonbury!) and they will fill a prescription from your physician that can then be brought to your physician to be administered (holy hoops!)
