Hi all. My name is Kevin, and I've wanted to be a military officer since I was a kid. I have a lifelong love of aviation, and I've always wanted to combine the two into an aviation career for the Air Force : )

I'm 23 years old, finishing up my first bachelors degree in Photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Since it's a BFA and not a BS, I decided to go for a second bachelors to maximize my chances at achieving a military career. I was recently accepted by Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Florida for Aeronautical Science, and am looking at both ROTC while I'm there, or OTS after I complete the BS degree. 23 is a bit of a late start, I admit, but my life wasn't in as order as I would have liked it to be at 18..

My love of aviation is the fault of my mother, who has worked for airlines her entire adult life (first for Pan Am, then Delta when Pan Am went under), so flying has been a part of my life since I was very young. I'm Israeli born, but I was raised in New York City and don't speak a word of Hebrew or know anything about Israeli culture and whatnot..

Some of my motivations for wanting to serve.. as someone who has had a chance to travel a fair bit, I have had a lot of chances to see that the United States offers anyone with the will and the desire to succeed the ability to do so unhindered-> More than any other developed nation. That said, I've been able to educate myself even coming from a poor immigrant background. Speaking to foreign relatives and friends, I believe firmly that social standing would have held me back anywhere else. I want to repay the country somehow

Another big one.. I was in Manhattan on 9/11. I was on 57th and Lexington, in class (I was in teh 11th Grade at the time) when the attacks started. Luckily, 57th and Lex is a few miles away (by the Queensboro bridge if you're curious) from the WTC site, but that didn't make the day any less scary. Those bastards didn't just attack my country, they attacked MY city, and my favorite buildings in my city! My first impulse was to enlist or join the NYPD, but I never let go of my dream of being an officer.. I can go into this more if you like, feel free to ask. This is getting a little long winded, so I'll cut this short here

Welcome to the forums, from across the Hudson, I remember 9/11. i was sick from school and crossing the Bayonne Bridge while they were burning. I was in 5th grade. Late is better then never. see ya later.

Welcome man and good luck :thumb:

I was in fifth grade and remember like it was yesterday. Im in South Jersey so I was 2 hours away. I was in class and my science teacher pulled down a map in class. She went on to tell us what happened. She asked what region of the world did this. I said the middle east, she said thats what the news reporters are saying. My mom picked me, my brother and sister up early and I spent the rest of the day watching the tv.

Welcome!

The FNG made me chuckle, especially since many of the newbies to the forum probably don't equate what FNG means to the AD world!

I think everybody remembers 9/11. I recall 2 very detailed memories. We were at Ft. Leavenworth CGSC (Bullet was AF, but selected to attend the sister school). I left the post at 9 to get shoes for the mil ball (which was cancelled later that day), by the time I came back at 10 the post had cement barriers up, MP's had M-16s and all cars were being searched.

My other memory was talking to Mom (she lives in NJ) and said it was so sad on her drive home b/c all of the bus stops had women just standing there waiting to see their spouse get off the bus. I talked to her several days later over the weekend and she said parking lots were filled with cars, obviously they didn't make it, and the cars stayed there. Not many people realize, but NJ lost the most citizens, since many live in NJ and commute to NY. Our hometown alone lost 35 people.

Are you a naturalized US citizen (a reqt to become an officer)?

Yes, we got it done as early as we could

I bet.. I commuted to my high school from Queens every day via subway, after 9/11 there were several familiar faces that I never saw again. Very sobering thought.

That's funny, I remember when I first heard it happened and everyone thought it was an accident, my very first thought was "terrorism".. I guess I'm more paranoid than others

Thanks for all the welcomes guys!
