While the Senior Military Colleges get a fair amount of conversation and publicity on this forum, the Maritime Colleges get somewhat less. But they deserve a lot more. The two oldest- NY and Mass Maritime have each been singled out by multiple publications for their Return on Investment as both boast virtually 100% well paid professional employment shortly after graduation. As the son and nephew of Ft Schuyler grads - I have spent a life time watching for the ship as we cross the Throggs Neck Bridge and I have known a number of Ft Schuyler and Mass Maritime grads who have had great careers in the military, at sea and in a host of civilian careers. So if you are looking for a regimented College experience which offers you some really unique opportunities (see the link for this year's summer sea term- The Empire State will have been in the Azores, Spain, Italy, Greece, Ireland and Denmark this summer I believe), at a reasonably priced college ( almost all of the Maritime schools offer regional rates for out of state cadets if you are from a state that has signed a regional agreement), and are interested in the sea , transportation, engineering or environmental management - check out the Maritime Colleges (SUNY, Mass, Maine, Texas and California). They all offer the opportunity for commissioning in the Navy and Coast Guard and SUNY also offers Army and AF ROTC commissioning options. They are they unsung opportunities on this forum- but you should do some investigating- you may be very pleasantly surprised!

My son graduated from Mass Maritime after being nominated twice to the Academy without an appointment. He got his commission as USNR Ensign with six more graduates and one direct USN at commissioning ceremony on the USS Constitution in Boston Harbor. He went SIP program with an eight thousand dollar per year scholarship. We had the regional tuition rate which worked out great. Crossed the Equator and through the Panama Canal on the Kennedy during cruise terms and has the certificates to prove it. I think he now makes more money than his sister (USNA graduate, Captain USMC and his mother a teacher for forty years). Definitely unsung but worth the look. ROI is great and they also graduate from engineering with that Unlimited Coast Guard License.

Bruno - agree. Just not a lot of publicity about these institutions. The SMCs perhaps offer broader degree options? I would like to know more about these institutions - and career opportunities. One thing is for sure - getting a marketable degree these days is important - and if at an affordable price - even better. I meet a lot of young men and women who express interest in a Navy commission. But frankly - these are becoming fewer and fewer at NROTC units, as are scholarships. I believe on the ROTC forum it was mentioned that 4 year Navy Scholarships are being decreased significantly in favor of 3 and 2 year scholarships. This means for many middle class students they will need to either obtain an academic award or pay for their first year or two. If the aim is a commission in the Navy or Coast Guard at an affordable price - this is a great option. I would have no hesitation to suggest it as an option in addition to applying for ROTC scholarships to an SMC or ROTC school.
 
Definitely check out the Maritime Academy's as another route to Military Commission . Check (SIP) program if you want Commission to USN with scholarship included. Eight years commitment for reserves with an unlimited Coast Guard license ain't a bad deal for 32K scholarship.. Not enough people look at these schools. Son just made LTjG and had to go get his new Boards for Uniform at Tampa
