Gold bar recruiter

DS will graduate and commission in May 2017 and may be interested in a gold bar recruiting position. Any words of wisdom to help him apply or advice? Thanks

Let his PMS know as soon as they return to school that he is interested. Other than that, assuming he has a favorable reporting date for BOLC, it's more or less a crap-shoot on who the PMS likes best.

Concur. It's a teacher's pet position. I was a Gold Bar Recruiter, but my school only commissioned three people in the Spring.

A lot is going to depend on his BOLC date as well. An early date will mean there isn't enough time for him to be in the position and a later date can mean they would be in the position longer then the budget would allow.

At my son's school they chose a NG LT for Gold Bar, his report date to BOLC was also in line for what they required.

The above posters are all correct. Also, your son is not likely to get his BOLC date until March 2017 or thereabouts.

I'm 50/50 split on GBR in terms of how beneficial it is to do. On one side, it gets your clock started which is good. But doing the GBR gig for more than 3 months is a waste in my opinion. The reason being is that it means less time you'll have on the line as a LT and that time is precious. That's the time you're learning and growing and every day you're not doing that as a LT is wasted time. And then you factor in BOLC and other schools and that's even less time you have in a unit.

When I was about to graduate I wanted to be a GBR. It's chill, easy, and you're getting paid. Looking back, I'm glad I skipped it. Be advised, I'm not against the GBR program in any way if that's what someone wants to do, but in my opinion, ROTC is a place for Cadets, not Lieutenants.
