Hi everyone, my DS submitted his preliminary application and had his SAT scores sent about 3 weeks ago. According to the website it says that applicants will be notified by mail when their portal is open. Does anyone have any idea how long that takes? He called admissions and they said they did receive them and he would receiving instructions in the mail. Just looking for a reasonable timeline so he can get the ball rolling. Thanks!

My son was notified by email when his opened in May.
What he can do right now and talk to his math and English teacher so they are aware he'll be asking for LOR's. He'll submit their email addresses and they are sent via email something to complete and return electronically.
He could also let his school counselor know too, as they are going to ask her to verify his activities. He'll need his transcripts for at least Frosh thru Junior year, so he can get those.
And also, look into your MOC's and Senators for nomination requirements, forms, and possibly needing transcripts for them also.
Good luck and welcome to the roller coaster!!

Emphasis to what Calinavymom said with regards to nominations...those deadlines are sooner than the USNA application (although both applications should be worked in parallel)...you can at least work on that (if not already started) in the interim. I would give it 3 weeks from time of submission until receipt of letter. If it takes longer call admissions back.

Thank you Calinavymom and usnabgo08! He has already notified his teachers, began his MOC application, and had a preliminary meeting with his BGO. Hopefully he'll be receiving a letter this week. All state schools B-Z are just about completed as well. He applied for Summer Seminar but did not get in which is why he's a little behind. He went to STEM and a CVW so knows it's his plan A. Am I correct that he doesn't get his username and password to complete the application until he receives a letter? So many schools, so much information! You all are a lifesaver for a first timer like myself. Many thanks!

I'm a little confused now. If your DS applied to summer seminar, he should have received one or two things by the start of the summer: (1) email/letter notifying him of official candidacy (this has instructions for completing online application) or (2) email/letter saying that SAT/ACT scores need to improve. If your DS received the latter, then the email/letter should be sent once USNA receives updated scores. Your DS's BGO can let you know if he is an official candidate and if a letter has been sent (might be worthwhile to contact the BGO if he falls in the latter scenario or no correspondence was received at all and go from there).

Sorry for the confusion. When he applied for summer seminar he did not have SAT scores yet. He did receive an email in the summer stating to submit them once he received them. So that's where he's at now. Scores were sent a few weeks ago. Thats why I was inquiring how long it takes once they receive scores. Good idea for him to contact his BGO. We're not a military family and don't live in a city (although it's very large) where there seem to be many service academy applicants (although I could be wrong). His school advisors are helpful however they do not know much about the process. This forum as well as our local recruiting office has been priceless.

Ok I would give it some time then. The BGO will be able to see when he is an official candidate. The scores might not be entered yet and if you had them sent from the CollegeBoard it takes a few weeks for them to be sent and updated in USNA's system.

....as well as our local recruiting office......

For those not familiar with the process of applying to USNA, be careful of the advice you might get from a local recruiting office. They will sometimes provide information that isn't totally accurate and often times are more interested in meeting their enlistment goals than in providing the information you really need.

School advisers can't be familiar with the details of the application processes of the thousands of college that are around. Best to use the official USNA website and your assigned BGO for the most accurate information.

Thank you and I agree 100%! I went with him to the recruiting office so he could introduce himself and gather information on the ROTC scholarship. I saw the recruiters in action! I had to make it very clear that enlisting was not an option. Even if his plan Z is his only option, he will never regret getting a college education. The military will still be there! He sent his BGO an email yesterday. Does the BGO also assist with questions regarding ROTC? All of this is new to me. Everyone on this forum has been so gracious and helpful.
