How strict is admissions on word count? If I am 20 words over will this keep me from submitting the statement and having it reviewed. Also would the same apply for the ROTC application? Thanks in advance.

The military is all about following instructions. Part of the application process is to assess if the candidate can follow instructions, submit required material in the specified format, on time.

Editing for concise expression, eliminating redundancies and streamlining the message should bring your piece into alignment with the requirement. One of the basic officer skills is being able to convey key ideas and relevant information in brief formats.

When I sat on certain Navy review boards, the first pass through the applications was to immediately eliminate all those that were incomplete or not in the required format. If an applicant couldn't take the time to get it right, then we didn't take the time to review it.

Honestly, when I wrote my essay, I went over. They have a strict character count, which wouldn't let me submit, but words can go over. The suggested 250-500 word limit (or whatever it is), follows the character count.

What you will learn is that precision in the military is very important. Let me restate your sentence and tell me if you think it is OK...

How strict is brigade on artillery location? If I am 20 yards to the right will this keep me from submitting the coordinates and having the artillery fired? Thanks in advance.

I totally agree with CaptMJ. And most college essays do have a limit. In my opinion, there may be a software limit. So you may not be able to submit or once your word limit has been reached it could omit the last few words. I would rewrite till it fits, to ensure your point comes across
