Citadel Acceptance

Well DD's acceptance to The Citadel came on Saturday! She is a candidate for USMA and USNA, but Citadel is her first choice for Plan B. As the mother of a daughter who potentially could be choosing to attend an institution where males make up 90% of the student body, I am hoping to get some perspective into life as a female at The Citadel from either other parents of daughters who attend or have attended and/or current/former female cadets Any advice, words of wisdom, for either myself or her would be greatly appreciated.

Sent you a PM. Congratulation to your daughter, and to you. Citadel alumni are passionate and committed. Our daughter went to A&M, not The Citadel, so I can only offer generic advice. The Senior Military Colleges are difficult and challenging by design, rewarding, but challenging. Being a female in those institutions adds to the challenges and to the potential psychological reward. Best generic advice, Run, then run some more. Your daughter can find the Citadel's physical training standards - train to 'em; the more you sweat today the less you'll bleed tomorrow thing. The Knob year is challenging, try not to take it personally. Again, best wishes and congratulations.

Well actually its 92% male. Females have done quite well at The Citadel, they have a higher GPA and lower dropout rate; all the female cadets and alumni I have met are very exceptional ladies and have been extremely successful. Its not for everybody but like males if they have the persistence and desire they will do well.

Teragram - Congrats to your daughter. If you do not receive a reply from a Mom or a current female cadet - PM me and I will arrange a contact. The Admissions Office also has a female officer on staff who is directly responsible for answering questions prospective female Cadets may have - don't forget to tell your daughter to avail herself of this office to ask any questions she may have. I personally have worked with many young women applicants and can look back on their accomplishments at The Citadel with pride.

Thank you everyone for the congratulations, DD was over the moon excited! We did speak with a female admissions officer when we first visited last October and got many of our initial questions answered and concerns addressed. DD has no reservations about being amongst a majority of males and actually has always thrived when having to "keep up"...she loves a challenge. I know she is strong both physically and mentally, I think I am just having some Mommy anxiety that I will have to keep at bay
