just curious about how my application looks, and if i have a chance of getting into usafa or the prep school:
29 act
3.97 gpa
captain of football, wrestling, and track teams
8 varsity letters
president of spanish club
200+ hours of community service

Your scores seem very similar to my son and he got in. As I am sure people have told you, really you are competing against the others in your district. If you have a competitive district that may not be enough, if you do not you probably are good.

if you don't mind me asking, would you be able to give me details on your son's scores and extracurricular activites so i can gauge myself on whether i need to retake my act or not

You should retake your ACT. 29 is on the lower end and since the academy super scores, with a little studying you should be able to bring that up. Also is your GPA weighted or unweighted? There are so many factors that go into the decision, why not make yourself as competitive as possible?

USAFA10s is exactly right. There are so many factors that it is impossible to gage yourself against your competition (or for anyone to do so). Your scores look pretty competitive. Many people can tell you that a lot of individuals with your scores got an appointment and some with higher scores than yours did not. You can look up the median scores from years past. That is the best any of us can do. You will compete against those in your congressional district first, if you do not get the appointment there, you will then compete nationally for an appointment (you also need a nomination for that of course). That is why you should take and re-take the ACT (or SAT) as many times as possible, unless you get a 36. You need good CFA score, good letters of recommendation, good teacher recommendations, good ALO recommendation, DodMerb, good interviews and a nomination, etc., etc. Attain your very best. Put your all into this and make yourself as competitive as YOU can possibly be. Even if my son had not received an appointment, I knew he would gain so much from the experience of applying and giving it his all, that it would make him a better student and stronger moving forward with whatever plan. If you put your ALL into it and apply to the best of your ability, you should be proud of those efforts. John Ruskin said, "The biggest reward for a person's effort is not what they get for it, but what they become by it."

I will start by saying we are not in a very competitive congressional district for nominations. My son had a 29 ACT as well, super scored to 30. His Unweighted was 3.7 and his weighted was 5.3. He was captain for hockey and played lacrosse as well, also played on year long travel. Spanish club, Hispanic American club, tons of clubs can't remember all of them. He Required no medical waivers and excellent PFT. Lots of recommendations, awards and volunteering. He also was accepted at USMA, four year AFROTC for U of I and three year AROTC. It really depends just do your best.

Spoke to my DS over Parent's Weekend and we talked classes and the subject of admission came up. One of his roommates had to do a year at Purdue before getting accepted this year. My DS said the guy's numbers were very good - over 30 ACT, 4.0 GPA, good athlete, etc. He just wasn't the top candidate in his area the first year he applied. He was the second year and is doing great in his first year. My DS opined that being known to the ALO and MOC the second year really helped his roommate. I found it interesting and wanted to pass it along to you.
