Has it occurred to anyone else that we should just make all presidential candidates go through DoDMERB? But, I mean including with penalties for withholding or misrepresenting information. What say you SAF? Seems like presidential candidates should at least meet the same qualifications as future officers, with some concession to the fact that it is for the most part a desk job.

Thanks for the good chuckle this morning.

Heck, most past, present and/or future presidents couldn't even pass a real security clearance check, much less DoDMERB scrutiny, without a lot of waivers. But, as we've seen, they have access to highly classified information that they don't seem to handle correctly, with still no repercussions.

I've actually been pondering the same thing.

I've been reading all the speculation that HC has Parkinson's disease and that this has been an ongoing medical issue for several years. If this is the case, then she knew that she was medically not qualified to be president but choose to run anyway. Having recently watched my son spend a year dealing with a medical issue at WP, the issue of being medically qualified for a position has been heavily on my mind. Seems reasonable to me to require that potential president prove that they are medically qualified. And the test should be a bit more rigorous than proving that they can open a jar. ;)

Negative.

Abe Lincoln would be disqualified for suffering from depression.

US Grant was a chronic alcoholic & probably already had pre-diagnosed cancer from cigars when he took the oath.

William Howard Taft weighed like 350 pounds. Got stuck in a White House tub.

Teddy Roosevelt was probably bipolar, had terrible eyesight & was a nut.

Franklin Roosevelt was in a wheelchair & drank cocktails from noon till bedtime.

Eisenhower smoked four packs a day, had two heart attacks & strokes while in office.

John F Kennedy was an absolute physical wreck.

LBJ & Nixon were both probably manic depressives, too.

On the other hand, Jimmy Carter & George W Bush didn't drink, some, swear & went to church like 12 times a day. Didn't help. Frankly, I'd have preferred Ike or JFK.

Bob Dole & John McCain didn't get elected but their physicals certainly would have noted their obvious war-related limitations.

You think someone diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease would run for president out of some kind of ego trip or something? I mean, you know it ain't gonna end well.

Bordering on birther stuff there.

JFK did a bang up job...

There are plenty of good leaders who can't pass a DODMERB physical, and plenty of crappy leaders who could.

The military doesn't have a monopoly on leaders, not even close.

Day-Tripper; you left out GW who would have been DQ's for dental and RR who had Alzheimer's (certainly by the time of his 2nd term).

For me anybody that runs to become the President is on some sort of ego trip. Although you can make money after post presidency, there are easier ways to make money (Clinton being "broken" to about $80 million for Bill and $40 million Hillary according to the internet) . You can help others and improve the world/country without being the President (What's Clinton Foundation doing if not helping folks in need). Why does Trump wants to become the President? He is rich. He will be watched by the Secret Service 24/7. Not like the show, people will be telling him constantly "Mr. President, you/we cannot do that."

Since this is off topic - is it too far off to think that even if HRC has Parkinson's that she still wants to be first female President to secure her place in the history (EGO), than stay in office as long as she can until the Parkinson Disease forces her to give up. That's why we will have a Vice President. Take it one step further, her handlers can easily force HRC out with release of the medical record, especially Republicans still have the majority control of the Congress.

Do you really think something bad is going to happen to Hillary if she got elected after hiding the fact that she had Parkinson's? HRC will have secured her place in history. She might use her condition to push her agenda. If she had a Parkinson's disease and left office early, it will be a footnote. Next presidential candidates will face more question about their health, but do you think HRC cares? Dems might lose some Congressional seats, but again do you think HRC cares about Dems losing Congressional seats if that's a price for her becoming the President. I am sure Clinton Foundation will set a goal to cure Parkinson's Disease.

Agree with day-tripper. There is absolutely no reason presidential candidates need to adhere to DoDMERB standards. They may be the C-in-C but they will not be on the battlefield. Their stresses are different as is their access to medications during "battle".

For the record, it was a (mostly) tongue-in-cheek suggestion.

And it has been fun to debate the idea, but in all seriousness, I do think that some medical issues should preclude someone from the office of president. It is a physically, emotionally and mentally demanding job which requires a good deal of stamina. I think that some health issues would get in the way of fully doing this job.

Wait I want to check with my campaign manager.

Never mind. There is no truth available from either candidate.

'merica!

In 1980 Ronald Reagan was a 70 year old whom smoked Camels (albeit filtered) & drank what they called "High Balls" back then. He was twice-married, with three adult children whom he had problematic relationships with. And he was from Southern California.

Would he have passed today's litmus test for medical fitness?

I about fell over laughing thinking of Mrs Pants Suit doing the forward leaning plank. And before your knickers get twisted, I would look pretty hideous even considering that plank.

I have some reservations about a person approaching 70 who has had a cerebral event.

I also reservations about someone who opts, on purpose, for that hair style.

It's ok; I'm sure they have their own set of reservations about the likes of my ilk.

DayTripper: Reagan had four children: Maureen, Michael, Patricia, and Ron. Two with first wife (adopted), and two with Nancy, bio. Maureen has since died of cancer.

Both Trump and Hilary are just a couple years younger than John McCain, who was often accused of being too old for the job. I guess all the people in their 50s were busy working.
