So my DD, shot up a flare about 10 days ago asking if Mom or Dad could visit over Columbis Day Weekend. Off we go, west coast to east coast for a 3 day weekend, (2 days for me, gotta be in Chicago on the 10th).

We get to see her for lunch on Saturday, and then she says she can sit with us at the Game, after that we are headed into DC.

Question about seats at the game. I was thinking that seats across the field from the Mids around row 2-3 on the 25-30 yard line would be pretty good. We could watch the Mid section from there. Wife wants to be on the Navy Side, but wouldn't we just be watching the backs of a lot of heads sitting behind the Mids?

I am also wondering if after she finishis with the "March In" if she will have other obligations that would require her to be on the Navy side of the field. I've been trying to reach her to clarify this stuff but getting ahold of her isn't easy. My quesitons are.

1) DD says she can sit with Mom and Dad during the game because she in on weekend leave. That said does she have any other obligations during the game that would require her to sit on the Navy side?

2) Opinions/guidance on best place to sit, generally.

I do not know current rules, but if she says she can sit with you then I am guessing she can. She wouldn't have any obligation at the game, unless she has watch (assuming she doesn't since she didn't mention it). She can leave after Blue & Gold. My season tickets were always gold side (facing the Brigade). Few differences, facing Brigade is always more fun in my mind. You can their antics rather than seeing t from the side or above. This side of the stadium gets lots of sun. It can be blazing hot for the first few games, but warmth come cold games is worth it. Bring sunscreen, hat and sunglasses. With the sunny going down earlier daily it won't be as bad as a week 1 game.

It's 80% chance of rain. All day. Get your plastic rain ponchos at your drugstore before you come, and fold up some plastic 13 gal bags to sit on. The parking lot will be a sea of mud, but you won't be parking there unless you have pre-purchased it, so that means a slog from outer lots at Germantown school or from nearby houses who charge $20 to park in their driveway. Wear jeans, appropriate shoes, and hooded rain gear. Travel light. If you can find any seats open in the lower tier underneath the upper tier, take them. That's my first bit of advice!

If you haven't read the Navy Gameday Guide at navysports.com, I recommend it.

Seats - there are pros and cons to Blue side and Gold side. Mids sit in Lower Blue near Navy end zone. I have always liked my seats in Upper Blue above the Brigade, because I can see cheerleaders, goats, plebes doing push-ups, Bill the Goat, D&B, the Dant revving up the Brigade, and the general mass of mids.

Is your DD a plebe? Regs must have changed, and I don't have a sponsor mid handy to ask, and I haven't texted one to ask yet. The following comments reflect how it's been in recent years. 1/c and 2/c may submit requests to sit with parents at a game; if a mid from those classes is on weekend liberty (not leave, that's something different), they are gone from the Yard having fun somewhere else. Plebes may indeed have a weekend, which means overnight liberty but not leave, but it won't start until after Blue and Gold is sung, and the plebe marches over and sits in uniform with the Brigade in duty status. As I noted, regs may have changed, or her company may be one of those who gets creative with interpretation. It's her responsibility to look it up in the regs and get a clear understanding from her chain of command, so just trust her to do due diligence on the difference between leave and liberty, and what her weekend entitles her to.

EXACTLY what I thought Hoops!
I will let my wife know you think she's absolutely and utterly WRONG! ------Thanks!

Great info MJ I will ask her if she has all the needed boxes checked---- and I will bring the boots.

No no no ;)! Had no idea I blundered into a marital field of discussion. I caveated my comments - regs do change - special requests do get granted. With these 3 pm and later games, mids do get some pre-game liberty, then have to muster for march over. Just let DD figure it out!

My DH and I have a rule that has worked for 34 years. He is always right. I always get my own way. He can rest on the lofty peak of rightness, but we do what I want in the end. We joke about it.

Latest Weather Channel 90% rain during the day, 40% showers at night. 71 deg, light winds.

I have been negotiating contracts for 35 years from Ban-dung to Madrid. I have never acheived the success your DH has----To be "right!?" that would be awesome! I don't mind doing what she wants too much.

Thanks to you both, just snaged the tickets

Strongly recommend double checking with DD. I'd like to be wrong, but at the beginning of this season 1/C can seat anywhere with friends and family, 2/C can too IF they can show authorization by Company Officer (an approval email/text on their phone will do) to 1/C who approaches and inquiries. Underclassmen are supposed to sit with the Brigade during the game.

Thanks for the info Ktna. Honestly, I am past caring. If she is wrong, I am out $35 dollars for a ticket (MAN! good seats just evaporated while I was waiting for DD to reply). When you look at what this little junket will cost the ticket cost is just "not on the radar". Your input will be used to manage DD and Wifes expectations.

Thanks

I attended the first home game of the season and saw a few mids in uniform sitting with parents. Until a captain came over and spoke with one and they all promptly moved back to the brigade.

Always your decision, but flying across country for a very brief visit, maybe in the rain, doesn't make much sense to me. Perhaps she's depressed or has a problem she wants to take over, but she will be home in a little over a month, then again at Christmas.

That's a lot of money for airplane tickets, hotel, car, etc. Everytime we head across country it's two or 3 grand. You probably have more money than me, but I wouldn't go, knowing they'd get to come home twice in the near future.

Youre probably getting daily calls, but you can always skype, e-mail, or instant messenger.

Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth, not always popular... that's for sure.

Our DD also banked leave for this Columbus Day weekend. It is our understanding, however, that Plebes must sit with the Brigade for the duration of the game. They have to be in a convenient location to do those pushups. Given that Navy is playing a top-ten team in Houston, we are hoping for a few opportunities to do those push-ups. . . . Go NAVY!!!

Please allow me to correct what I just said. . . . DD banked an unused liberty (not leave) from a couple of weeks ago. Misuse of term by rookie Navy parent.

Leave is at Thanksgiving, winter break, spring break, summer block, inter-sessional. One of the big differences is plebes can wear civvies, drive cars, etc., while in a leave status. Liberty is just the ability to leave the Yard for short periods, sometimes overnight.

It's not that it's unpopular it's that it doesn't apply to the topic at hand. That's like if I asked what kind of car to buy and you suggested a Cannondale bicycle.

Got it. Thanks.

Naw, Plebe is doing "Great"; although she was really pissed when she made her request a couple of weeks ago.

Just read your post and lurched out of my seat to exit the aircraft. Sadly, I wasn't able to slip past the restraining hand of my wife as I rushed through First Class (our relative seating is another story). I'm affraid your advise comes late for me. This is a "pain in the Asp" trip but: 1) Wife rejoices at being needed, and she really wants to have a doctor to daughter conversation about "Pleabola" (nice Murf) with DD. 2) If DD sits with me at the game great, but its OK if she doesn't I can watch her do pushups and interact with amazing Kids I am proud she calls "Her Tribe". 3) If the Mids avoid being a "Human Sacrafice" to Houston (sorry MJ/Hoops/Et al) I will be going Bat-(----) Krazy with the rest of the crowd. If the prognosticators are right, I will spend the 2nd half shifting attention between the Navy game and my PAC12 network App watching what promises to be a rightoeus "curb-stomping" of he Ducks in Eugene! 4) Rain?!---I live in Seattle, screw rain----rain never stopped nothing.

In short I am resigned (a nessacary view of things from 30,000 ft in row 17 seat F). I look forward to seeing my DD again and glad she is excited about seeing me!

As far as the money goes (BTW I am NOT in First Class). Yale, and Prinecton made it very very very clear to me that I was gonna get ZIP help with her $280K + costs for an UNDERGRAD DEGREE! Hell, the UW would have run around $100K (best case). DD has the goodwill $ to draw on. My two girls both freshmen WORKED REALLY HARD AND ABSOLUTELY KILLED IT WITH THEIR COLLEGE SELECTIONS! I was seriously looking at a burn rate of $130k a year----- I'm at around $25-30k even with absurd/wonderful/pain in the Asp trips like this. Thank you for reminding me about the $!

As for your "UNPOPULAR" thinking---------------- Your words reflect almost exactly my first thoughts when DD asked us to visit.

Oh yah: AND I have an absoulutley STELLAR bottel of Tequila in my luggage for the wonderful couple who seem to genuinely like my daughter and go out of their way to watch over her in Annpolis. The guy is a burbon drinker----------- his post college tequila education begins :)

Thanks to all for the help offered on this tread! and no spell check on this one

YES! I will be going Bat (bleep) crazy on my couch if a miracle happens...

@Just Dad, did you take advantage of being in Annapolis and attended Octoberfest with DD in Dahlgren last night? Glee Club concert afterwards?
