I am currently a high school junior looking to apply to the Coast Guard Academy. Besides keeping grade up, having extra curriculars, and sports; what should I be doing then to get ready for the application process?

Have you made a trip to the campus (how far away you are can influence that). Have you been in touch with the Admissions Officer for your region, or reached out to an Admissions Partner? (PM me if you would like contact information). Have you been to a local Service Academy Night put on by your congressional representative or senator? Even though USCGA does not require a congressional nomination, we usually have representation there. Are you considering applying for AIM?

AuxNoob has given a great response. My DS learned a lot about the complete process from the CGA representatives he met at his local Military Academy Days hosted by the congressional representatives for his area. He attended them for several years. They are worth making the time to attend and they may also give you the chance to meet your geographic area's assigned admissions officer in person.

My son is a senior this year and in the process of finishing up his application/acceptance process - he went to AIM and a Bear Day ... He attended local police and fire department summer camps - he became class treasurer - a big thing they look for is not just being active but being out front ... being a leader or team captain or mentor ... also figure out who your recruiting officer is and start a dialog with them ... also find your local admission partner and they can help you through the process as well

I did forget, if you are an athlete go to the athletics page and contact the appropriate coach to be recruited. They have input into the appointment process.

Definitely apply for the AIM program. It really helped by applicant decide if he wanted to do this. Great program

Is the admission partner and recruiting officer the same?

Leadership...DS was captain of two sports teams and had multiple leadership positions in the marching band. He didn't get into AIM which was a huge disappointment for him but he did attend the Cadet for a Day overnight. He ended up with an appointment in early November along with two other Academy appointments and we believe it was due to being pretty well-rounded. He chose to go in another direction service-wise but it was really tough for him to turn CGA down but he is happy where he is.

no - the recruiting officer is one of like 7 regionally assigned USCGA Admission staff based in New London ... an admission partner is usually a parent of a current or recently graduated cadet and live somewhere local to you - they can guide you through the process and help answer questions ...

Admission Partners are:

Alumni of the Coast Guard Academy
Active duty and reserve personnel
Parents of current and former cadets
Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary
Coast Guard civilian employees

All are volunteers.

Alaska beat me by seconds! Admissions Officers are commissioned Coast Guard officers assigned to a region. They get switched around between regions sometimes.
