Title says it all! I was in the same shoes as all of you guys awaiting for an appointment to the academy back last school year but instead I was offered a slot at the prep school, obviously I took it without having hesitation and now being here for almost five months and having gone through basic I'd love to help answer any questions you may have! Fire away! Don't be shy! Parents welcomed to ask questions too! :)

Could you give me a preview of your resume? Just curious as to how I match up with you.

Also, why do you think you didn't get into the Academy, but instead offered a prep slot? Low act scores?

A preview of my resume? I'm gunna type what first comes to mind. All A student, had a few dual credit courses under my belt, I was in Army JROTC and in leadership positions within the program, over three years of high school I had 3 different jobs, I played varsity basketball and also participated in track, softball and volleyball. I was an officer in student council, a member of NHS, I am a certified nurses assistant in the state of Texas (which I also went to school for while still in HS) and top 3% of my class. Those are some of the things I put on my résumé.

I didn't get a direct appointment to the academy due to the school I came from. A LOT of what I was suppose to be taught during those years I never received, I live in pretty cruddy area so instead of denying me an appointment they offered the PS to me. I also never took the ACT and SAT weren't high as they could've been, I was only able to take it once.

Why did I choose the w? I'm not sure what you are referring too.

I did not apply to other service academies, I didn't want to be in any other branch firstly and secondly I didn't want to go to a military school back when I was in HS in the first place. I was actually going to either enlist to pay for college or two rely on all the scholarships I received to go to a school of my choice but this overall was the best choice & had the best opportunities.

I choose USAFA the day after they flew me out here to visit the school. It's a program called DVP where they pick seniors from all over the country and fly them all in (expenses paid) so that they can visit USAFA and see face to face what it is like there. I had never been on a plane before and I've I got here seeing that it wasn't nearly as bad as people thought I was almost certain this was the place for me. I thought it was going to be just terrible 24/7 with the military lifestyle drilled into but it is truly like a college campus. That is what sold me. Also a guy named LT Young who was in charge of the program was a HUGE influence on me speaking about how much of change USAFA had made in his life and how it'll do the same for me. We both come from about the same background and to see how successful he was just by attending USAFA I was won over.

I'm sure you could, USAFA picks you to attend the program, almost like recruited athletes. When I went on my trip practically everyone I had met on the visit was either offered an appointment or prep school slot. In my opinion the DVP'ers are the ones they really want at USAFA, but don't get bummed if you aren't picked for it, they only do 20-60 seniors out of the 10,000 applications so your chances of getting in are still high.

Yeah I was offered DVP and when i turned in my paperwork, I got an email saying I couldn't attend. However, about a week later, you get contacted by a recent academy grad as a "mentee" to have all your questions answered.

Would you happen to know if the prep school is only meant for athletes who need to boost up their academics, vice versa, or for those that show potential? I've been hearing all three but I'm not sure if it's really one or another.

My son is currently in this year's prep class and LOVING it. He is a prior and has recently submitted his paperwork for the academy admission. His request for a nomination though went in to the politicians offices past their deadlines. I am fearful of losing the possibility of getting in if he does not get that nomination. He has said to quit worrying as he is in charge of all that now, says he is fine and has kindly assured me that part of my mom job is over and all is good. Can you get into the academy without the nomination if you are a prior doing really well at the prep?

Not only for athletes. My son was a preppie, and not an athlete. Most likely needed to boost something in his WCS (whole candidate score). I think it could be a combination of all three. But, I am not an expert. Good Luck!

What month were you offered prep school?
My son was offered in May, a few days before he graduated. Historically, it seems to be a week to a few days before they graduate from the Prep when they find out if they receive an appointment.
