Son had a message this evening from Senator Cornyn. Senator Cornyn's selection committee will be meeting on November 18. Has anyone heard anything/ gotten any information from Senator Cruz?

Is anyone experienced with the Texas process? This is his first time (our families first!) time applying. Son has applied to USNA and USAFA.

Thank you in advance!

I got the same email from Cornyn.
I still haven't heard anything from Cruz, neither have several of my friends. Good luck to your son!

DS got the same email from Cornyn office. Have not heard from Cruz yet. DS has a congressional interview on 11/19.

Unless things have changed, don't expect a nomination from both Cruz and Cornyn. Their offices coordinate to not double-nominate. However, it is possible to receive a nomination from your House Rep and one of the senators.

IIRC, the senators send out nomination letters just before Christmas. At least that's how it was three years ago.

Thank you. I was wondering if our state would double-nominate. Son has applied to USAFA and USNA. He is torn between the 2. When he completed his congressional/senate paperwork over the summer he was set on one academy but as he has gotten further in the process and met with ALO/BGO he is leaning toward the other. He would be honored to be offered an appointment to either one.

Our Rep would only nominate you to one academy, but I have read here of other Texas U.S. Reps that will nominate to more than one academy. I think if your son gets a Senator nomination, it will be one nomination, to a single academy, likely the one he ranked highest.

I assume every candidates get a letter whether a nom or reject. Also, what does "IIRC" stand for ?

IIRC - If I remember correctly

Yes, you will get a letter either way.

My DS spoke with Cornyn's office a few weeks ago. The office confirmed that he and Senator Cruz coordinate not to double nominate. He also told her that they try to coordinate with the Representative as well but they do not talk with all of them. Last year close friend received a nomination from Cornyn and local Representative. DS received a nomination to both USMA and USAFA from the local representative. Last year, Congressional interviews were in early December.

This is based on last year, but the process is probably the same. Both Cruz and Cornyn compare lists. They do not compare lists with every representative. Cruz and Cornyn do not have interviews, their board simply looks at the paper and decides. As a result, the student from something like Pecos ISD with 50-100 students in the graduating class (I don't know that-just guess for illustration purposes) who is a three sport letterman, student counsel rep, doesn't have much homework, works after school and gets high grades likely looks better on paper than the kid from Jesuit Dallas who is dedicated to one sport, already knows how to study effectively and efficiently, gets good grades, but has homework and does not work after school. The fact that the Jesuit kid is much better suited for the rigors of an Academy than the other does not come into play at the Senator level I don't think. (I just picked those schools because I have no affiliation with them) Last year I think they had about 600 applicants--I could be a little off on the number but not much. So, if you are not stellar on paper, or, have an inside in with Cruz or Cornyn where your application gets a gold star, it is a tough road. Yes, local reps sometimes give only one nom. Some give multiple. The nomination process is probably one of the few times that those who have purchased homes in affluent districts with top notch school districts are penalized for their choice. There is a much greater chance of nominations from districts that have lower public school educational offerings than the places where the school districts are uber competitive and filled with type A people. But, when we went through this last year, even at the local level, or maybe even more so at the local level, politics happens. If you know your rep, or if you know someone who knows your rep, use it to your advantage. But, even if your rep only gives one, they make exceptions at times. my DS received two from the same rep, who preaches he only gives out one. He gave a second because the Academy sent a note indicating that they needed nomination in order to provide appointment. Nomination was forthcoming within 24 hours of the rep's office getting the note. So, keep all your options open. And, remember, for USMMA, any rep in the state of TX can give you a nom.

With regards contact--Cornyn contacted with advise as to when the committee met, and then a note saying sorry. Cruz was a black hole and we received nothing from him after the application was sent. Got a different feel from him during the process as a result than his public political persona was. Good luck

That's my big concern with our son. I agree with what you're saying. We are in an affluent area outside Houston. Over 1,000 in graduating class. It's a competitive 6A school, lots of AP, hours of homework nightly, goes to state in almost all sports every year. It is a competitive environment and that top 7% for university of Texas admission really knocks out some great kids who are in the top 25% but in reality are more prepared for college than those kids who were accepted. Most kids at our school are only on varsity their junior/senior years. Very few multi-sport athletes. There are no captain America/walk on water/stellar resume kids (Class president/captain of varsity football, basketball and baseball team for 4 years/valedictorian) like you see from these from smaller schools.

I would guess you are west or north. we are in that area north of Houston. DS went to school at an all boys school in town. weird thing is, if we had moved to the heights, or to a 3-4 story home near the school, we would have had Ms. Lee as the rep, and he would have been top dog across the board. But, in the end, DS found the right academy, and the right academy found him, and, we, and ds both agree that that is the case.

If you are north of Houston, and are with Brady, he does have a good track record of sending kids. Culberson sends a number as well. The good thing is that, at least in Brady's case, almost everyone who applied got one nomination. And I think he sent 9 or so to academies this year. if you are with brady, fell free to pm me.

We are west of Houston (district building the $70 million high school football stadium ) and are with Congressman Olsen. Son interviews with him in December.

Both of my kids (Dallas/Fort Worth) requested appointments from Senator Cornyn and our US Congressman. Neither gave interviews and both of my kids received their appointments from our congressman. They both received cards in the mail from Senator Cornyn's office stating that they knew they received appointments and he would not double appoint so the offices do talk to each other.

jmco759. yes, some, but not all. I think, on this board somewhere, there was a discussion over which offices may be coordinated with and which may be not. I think it was last year or so that I saw it.
Good luck

To clarify for the many SAF readers who are just starting to think about the SA process and seeing the terms, do you mean actual "appointments" (issued by SA) or "nominations" (originating from several sources, to include senator and MOC)? I couldn't tell whether you were sharing present day happenings, or perhaps relating additional congratulatory correspondence from the elected reps' offices following up offers of a past appointment from an SA.

Good info shared that some states internally collaborate and do not dupe noms.
