Are the 4 year scholarships awarded to a specific unit as opposed to a specific school? Because on the NROTC website (I'm also applying for that scholarship as well) it says to list schools from different units and then you can choose which school you want in that unit, if you get accepted of course. So when it says to list 10 schools on the AROTC application, should I refrain from putting schools in the same unit?

The part from the NROTC website I was referring to is on the Scholarship Checklist where it says:

"Five college choices The Naval ROTC Scholarship is awarded to a specific Naval ROTC Unit. The Unit resides at a host school and there may be affiliated schools within the local commuting area. You must select 5 choices for the college or university you want to attend on the NROTC scholarship. One of your choices must be a public state college/university, but you do not have to qualify for "in-state" tuition at that school. Each of your 5 choices must be for a college/university at 5 different Naval ROTC Units. There are only 70 units. Many of the units have cross-town colleges or universities associated with its primary college or university (see www.nrotc.navy.mil for a listing of Naval ROTC Units and associated
colleges and universities). You may not select a unit more than once; this includes the crosstowns. For example, if you select Drexel, you may not select the University of Pennsylvania as another of your choices. College choices are used for initial placement at particular NROTC unit only. If you are awarded a scholarship, you may use it at any of the affiliated schools with that NROTC unit. You are still responsible for applying to and being accepted for admission to the college/universities that you indicate for the Naval ROTC scholarship. Placement at a unit does not guarantee you admission to that college. We strongly suggest that you apply to all five of your listed choices as well as any affiliated schools which you might also like to attend. We will do our best to place you at one of your top 3 choices, but
we cannot guarantee such placement. There is also a possibility that we will be unable to place you at any of your listed choices and may contact you at a future date for additional choices. Please let us know how strongly you feel about your choices and the order in which you have placed them."

My son received a NROTC scholarship and they are unit specific so you need to get into the school(s) for that unit. You need to look at the unit if it is you top choice and the likelihood of getting accepted to a school in the unit. My sons top choice was the UPenn unit and applied to UPenn, a reach and Drexel and Temple, to cover his chances of getting a spot. He was accepted to two of the three and had a scholarship in hand before UPenn made regular decision choices so he was set. There is the possibility of getting a scholarship before you know if you are accepted to your scholarship school. You then need to decide if you want to wait or try to transfer scholarship. I think though that army/air force gives you the money to use at unit of your choice.

The Army ROTC scholarship board will usually give you up to 5 of the colleges you have chosen from your original list of 10 to choose from to apply the scholarship. However, you have only 30 days from receipt of the scholarship paperwork to choose just 1 of those colleges to accept the scholarship for. If you receive the scholarship early enough in the process, you may have to make that selection before you have received an acceptance decision from that college. If you don't get into the school you have chosen, they give you the opportunity to transfer the scholarship to another of your school choices provided the unit is not already full.

The Air Force lets you use the scholarship at the school of your choice. However, their Type 7 scholarship is restricted to an in-state public school. I believe those can be converted to a three year Type 2 at any college, however.

CadetMom, so for the Air Force, if I were awarded the 4 year scholarship, would it say that it's for a specific school or a detachment?

For Air Force, you will not be designated a specific school. You can use it at any school (Type 1 and Type 2). However, you will be assigned to a specific major, and the school you select must offer that major.

2 yrs ago, our DS had to list the schools and the majors. For the AF they want to know the intended major since their push is for engineering degrees. Our DS got the full ride, even though he is not in the engineering program. It does happen, however, they really give the majority to engineering. Be up front and honest, don't say you are going engineering to try to have a better shot with the thought you will change majors, b/c they can rescind the scholarship. On their website they have every college listed that you're allowed to go to, there are thousands. I can tell you that if you are planning, UMD, UNC, Duke, Notre Dame, NYU, and UMiami...that AFROTC scholarships are accepted there, or at least 2 yrs ago! I think for the colleges they just want to make sure that there is a program at the school. I know at UMD there is no program for Navy, thus the kids have to go to Georgetown in DC for their ROTC portion.

Good luck!
