Marine, Astronaut, Senator John Glenn: Rest in Peace

Many are familiar with this poem, but it will be new to some:

High Flight

John Gillespie Magee, Jr

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

RIP, John Glenn.

One of the first plastic model kits I built when I was a kid, was that of the Atlas rocket with Friendship 7, John Glenn's space capsule on the top.

Many folks don't realize that Col. Glenn was also a decorated Marine Fighter pilot in his younger days.

I grew up wanting to be like him. I hope we prepared our children to fill the huge void you left.

I remember reading an article about he and Neil Armstrong several years ago when they were in their 70's and marveling at how remarkably physically fit they were at that age. In their 70's they looked like they were in their 40's or 50's.

Amazing lives.
Amazing people.
