The All Navy message soliciting applicants for Class of 2021 has been released:

http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/reference/messages/Documents/ALNAVS/ALN2016/ALN16054.txt

If you are an enlisted Sailor or Marine and you are on this forum, take a close look at the requirements and speak with your chain of command and your command career counselor. Look for the POA&M put out by your admin dept. They always have more slots than qualified candidates - is it because they are missing YOUR application? You could be selected to attend as a member of Class of '21 or Class of '22 via NAPS, depends on certain factors.

For the Divo and DH on SAF: maybe it is time to conduct a CDB for your hard-charging Sailors who you know have the potentials to be great additions to your wardroom?

Are you a parent of a young Sailor or Marine that due to circumstances out of his/her control, they ended up enlisting while you know they can do well in a vigorous academic and physical environment and to fulfill their dream?

Contact the POC on the message for specific questions.

I follow public domain message traffic even though I'm no longer on Active Duty.

It's a shame that the number of enlisted appointments to USNA from both USN and USMC have dropped so drastically.

Please spread the word of this opportunity to anyone you know who has a Sailor or Marine on their first enlistment.

Hey I'm really interested in this opportunity. I heard it existed but I really haven't found anyone to speak with who knows much. Is the opportunity only available to Navy and Marine enlisted?

Thank you,
David

Shoes answer, no.

Recommended first step is go to USNA Admissions web pages, read them all, every drop-down, every link. Many questions are answered there.

I have been reading and searching all day. It says its open to all members of the armed forces but then this is said which confuses me.

"The United States Naval Academy offers an outstanding opportunity for qualified enlisted members of the regular Navy, Naval Reserves, Marine Corps, and other armed forces to embark on careers as officers in the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps. Regular and Reserve Navy and Marine Corps service members compete for 170 appointments."

This was taken from the naval academy website. I am probably reading to much into it. However maybe this will explain my confusion. Are the 17o spots open to members of all branches of the armed forces or exclusively to Navy and Marine Corps?

Another recommendation related to researching primary sources. Call USNA Admissions, ask for the Navy senior chief (usually this rank) who handles enlisted applicants. He or she is there specifically to advise enlisted applicants. "Ask the Chief" in the Navy is always a reliable way to go.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will get on that tomorrow. Do you personally know anyone who has used this opportunity to attend the Naval Academy?

Dozens. I was on the Commandant's staff, we sponsor USNA mids, and I met many in the Fleet and other services over the years. Prior enlisted usually do very well, because they have a good sense of military culture and discipline and have matured in the years since HS. They know how to wear a uniform, march and make beds - timesavers. As long as they have the academic abilities, meet all other criteria, they have a shot to get in. Superb performance while enlisted and no conduct issues are a given. Enlisted personnel usually do a year at Naval Academy Prep School (NAPS) to polish academic skills. The big bar to ensure you meet is not being 23 or older on the day you report to USNA.

There are current and prior NAPSters who post here. Search for threads.

Thank you so much for your help and guidance. Im fast approaching 21 so I am going to get the ball rolling as fast as possible. Do I have to have a minimum amount of time in before I am eligible to apply. Also do you think I have a better chance going through Coast Guard or Navy Enlisted?

Thank you,
David

I think you missed the part about 'other armed forces', so it is NOT restricted to just those in the Navy/Marines.

I am not clear on what your current status is. Are you currently in college (you said you are 20 so I assume you are no longer in h.s.) or have you previously enlisted (when you refer to Coast Guard & Navy)???

These are all great questions for your chain of command and the SA admissions enlisted advisor. It could depend on type of contract, service needs, current service policy, if you decide to voluntarily leave the SA at some point or are involuntarily separated, and for what reasons.

I cannot emphasize enough going to primary sources to get current and accurate information for your specific case. Write down these questions, exhaust all reliable research sources (reviewing your service regulations online for enlisted commissioning program guidance, as well as SA) and then phone - Ask the Chief.

If you are successful in obtaining a commission, your service obligation is the one that goes with that. Any enlisted time you owed under your old contract is not added in, if I recall correctly. Your enlisted service time does count for pay purposes at commissioning, so you could be at paygrade O-1 over 2, if you have done 2 years enlisted service.

Good to know I am trying to get in touch with the Senior Chief as we speak. I appreciate all your time and willingness to assist me.
