W and I are newbies. We have dealt with 4 years of USNA and 2 years of post-graduate training, but now S has been assigned to a sub and getting close to going out (we think).

1. Will we know when his boat is headed out?

2. Will we have any communication with him while he is out?

Yes.
Not regularly, depends on mission and duration. "Run Silent, Run Deep." One of the main points of subs is they try very hard not to be found once submerged, so anything that can provide a trail - digital, sound or otherwise - is carefully controlled or shut down. "They" have eyes and ears watching for them, as we do for theirs. One of my Navy assignments was commanding a group of ships that towed arrays looking for "sub-surface anomalies." Any guesses what fish they were looking for? [emoji16]

Your DS will be given info for both emergency contact procedure and regular communications. The spouse group often includes parents and GF/BF on FB groups and updates.

Snail mail may delivered by helos making at at-sea day drop. Number your letters on the outside, because they will arrive in batches.

Thanks. Pretty much what I figured from a lot of reading in a lot of places. He is very excited and we are very concerned. We do know that he is VERY well trained.

Subs have some of the best chow around. Don't worry about that aspect. He will be around very smart, very focused, very careful officer and enlisted, all totally committed to operating their sub safely.

Subs have the best chow around, period. Many believe one of the reasons is that there is only one galley (kitchen) - everyone eats the same food as the Captain.

His schedule could change on very short notices, even when he is on deployment. Besides what CAPT MJ mentioned above, his ability to communicate varies depends on the area he is in.

Congrats to your JG (O-2) for completing power school and sub school. He will be very busy in the very beginning on his boat being a NUB (Non Useful Body) until he Qualified in Submarines and proudly wears his gold dolphins!

If you are able to visit him, ask him about opportunities to bring you onboard and keep an ear out for family cruises for either a day trip or a longer one. You will learn a lot and appreciate much more about what he and the crew does!

Congrats Mom and Dad!!!

A submariner once told me, "except for liver and onions night........."
