Waiver Timeframe?

Is it possible for a candidate to receive an offer of appointment while waiver consideration is going on? I have a nomination to both USAFA and USMA, both of my applications are complete, and my remedials have been completed with dodmerb. I have one DQ (code 164.70). All I am waiting on now is the waiver consideration. I guess what I am asking is, am I being considered by the admissions boards at each academy even though my waiver decision hasn't been processed yet?

From my understanding, you could be offered a letter of assurance or a letter of encouragement, but the appointment cannot be issued until the waiver has been approved. Good luck with the waiver process

Is that something that happens very often? I don't think I've heard, at least on this forum, of an applicant with a nomination getting an LOA in the spring but being held back by a DQ.

It happened last year. USNA offered a LOA in February with the only condition being medical waivers. The appointment was issued June 9. It doesn't happen often, but it can and it does.

DD was sent an AMI - asked for further X-rays for potential curvature of spine. Question is: if they send the remedial for just that one issue does that mean she cleared everything else?

Our experience from both USAFA and USMA is that you are not put forward for consideration of a medical until USAFA or USMA has decided to offer an appointment. In our case, USAFA was going to offer an early appointment but the USAFA docs refused to grant my DS the medical waiver. For USMA, they kept my DS on the list until late April/early May but never put him forward for the waiver. (He did earn an Army ROTC 4-year national scholarship and AROTC granted the medical waiver.) Best wishes. Also have a good plan B!

That's interesting, because I had a message pop up on my USAFA portal today saying that I will be considered for a waiver ("we have requested a waiver on your behalf"). I guess that's a good sign? Are not all DQs even considered for a waiver to begin with?

No -- not all DQs are considered for a waiver. For ROTC scholarships, you have to first "win" the scholarship before they will put you forward for a medical waiver. For the SAs they typically do not put you forward for a medical waiver consideration unless they plan to offer an appointment -- however, there are also cases where the waiver is granted but the appointment isn't offered because something changed in the make up of the class or some other factor. Being put forward by USAFA for a waiver is a definite good sign, however, an offer of an appointment isn't for certain unless they have told you to expect one.

Hard to tell. Did she have other things on her DoDMERB form she had to explain or that the doctor noted? Sometimes the list of remedials come out all at the same time and sometimes it seems to drib an drab along probably because different specialists looking at the different items with different workloads. Best wishes!

Yes- she had a couple of other items we added explanations for, in hind site, we overdid it due to not fully understanding the process. Thanks for your answer- that is very helpful and makes sense.

Someone with knowledge on this subject define what is meant by "waiver". For instance if a appointee failed the PIP and then allowed to take the Farnsworth Lantern test but fails that does a waiver allow him to still get in?

Waiver means that despite the DQ (for whatever reason) they decide to accept you anyway.
The criteria is determined by the waiver authority. It also seems to vary service and by the Doctor who requests and reviews the records.

DS received LOA from USMA in September and was Medically DQ'd in January for complications from an illness 5 years ago. He has been awaiting for decision from waiver authority for nearly 2 months (normal follow-up testing and evaluations sent in at the time DQ/waiver started). I've heard that the waiver authorities are running behind schedule compared to previous years. Also, does anyone know how "etched in stone" the April 15th deadline is for the LOA being withdrawn if not medically qualified?

Our DD got her LOA from USNA back in December and was medically DQ'd same month. Just heard this past week that her medical waiver was granted.

My understanding is that the final decision for granting a waiver is made at least in the case of the USNA by the Superintendent or the Director of Admissions on the Superintendent's behalf. The waiver decision is based in large part on the recommendation of the SA medical team/doctors. We were keeping close tabs with DoDMERB from our last communication to them for AMI to when USNA got the info from DoDMERB for Waiver consideration and by my estimation, it took them about 1-2 weeks from having all the information in hand to finally granting the medical waiver.

Unfortunately, don't know if there is an April 15th drop dead deadline but from prior posts elsewhere, looks like waivers have been granted up until or been AFTER I day(which is too late of course).

Best of luck!

vadad23 - Thanks for the feedback & insight. DS was fortunate and the April 15th deadline will not be an issue. He received notice last week that the waiver was approved and his file goes for final review by the Admissions Committee in the upcoming week. Assuming no hiccups, hopefully BFE shortly thereafter.

Best of luck to you and your DD.

That's great to hear! Keeping fingers crossed for you & DS!

My son received the LOA from USMMA in Jan 2017. DoDEMRB had requested several documents which we turned in the first week of March....this waiting game is very frustrating!

@vadad23...
May we ask what the "final review by the Admissions Committee" means or entails please? Our DS was also granted a waiver this week and the same wording was used. We are curious what that means. Thanks so much for any insight and Good luck to you and your DS. God bless~!
