Ok, so my son is on "plan B" having received the TWE from USNA yesterday and USMA has told him he is unlikely to make the waitiing list cut this year, although the final envelope has not yet come.

His preferred Plan B is to attend the local state university, taking Calc II, Chem, Eng, Hist, German etc. then reapply. However they just announced that they will be starting a new ArmyROTC program at the Univ this fall. Obviously he doesn't have an Army ROTC scholarship, but will be looking into doing Army ROTC there without scholarship. If he does this, he will be doing it with the specific goal of reapplying to USMA and USNA (he wants to go infantry). If he does not get in next year, he would transfer to a different Univ that will allow him to persue Engineering and Arabic, both not offered here. Hopefully doing so with a 3 year ROTC scholarship to that school. So here is the question...

1.) Will he be able to easily transfer to a different ROTC program since he is non scholarship?
2.) Are there any/many scholarships for those who transfer into a school? As I understand it they are run thru the individual school and not the national selection program.
3.) This may allow for him to get another nomination source to West Point, but as I understand it not to Annapolis, true?
4.) If he decides to go Navy-Marine option is this hard to do from one year in Army ROTC?

Thanks

1. If your DS transfers from one university to another and is not on scholarship it should not be a problem, especially since he has not contracted (ROTC cadets contract for th AF in the summer of their rising jr. yr)

2. I know for our DS's det (AF) you can get a ROTC nom. I am not sure about x-service. I would tell you that there are some students that will be scholarship students and vieing for that nom. Before DS enrolled LY the commander knew that he selected ROTC over the AFA. Th ecommander assured us and him, that if he changed his mind and wanted to re-apply he would support our DS. DS is/was the only cadet that had even applied to the AFA (plus had a proven track record of 4 nom sources), thus, it was a no brainer for the commander, as long as DS maintained good grades and was a good cadet. In Oct. the commander did come to him and re-offered the nom. support. DS declined. Just want you to realize that this something you should speak to the det commander about b/c he might already know of other cadets and will give you a realistic look at the chance of a ROTC nom.

3. I don't know about Army ROTC scholarship recipients, but AF recipients are required to take foreign language, I suggest he if he can take at least 1 foreign language ASAP, it might give him an edge for the scholarship.

Finally, I know for NROTC, he has to apply for the scholarship to use at that college, thus again contact the det commander, b/c they will give you the best advice on how to achieve this dream.

Good luck

1. yes. without a scholarship the freshman year Army ROTC is an elective course.
2. this will depend on what the school has available in a given year.
3. If he is in Army ROTC then his ROTC nomination is for West Point not Navy and vice versa. However, Any ROTC can help the application package.
4. No idea.

One more thought - even if your son has not applied for an AROTC scholarship he can still get one. Apparently, all candidates to West Point who are FQNS are eligible for an AROTC scholarship. check this out.

Question - the school where he wants to major in engineering and Arabic - (very challenging BTW) did he apply there yet? accepted?

Thanks for the reply

He has 5 years of German, grade school thru this his senior year in HS.
He is also taking his first year of Arabic thru the university here.

Hopefully that will help.

I will mention this to him so he can contact AROTC or WP to find out about this.

He has not yet figured out where he would want to do Engineering and Arabic, that would be his fall back for next year if he again gets declined. This year he will be going to the state university here doing the Chem, Calc, Eng, Hist and now hopefully ROTC here.
