If you're a junior who is extremely interested in competing for an appointment to the Naval Academy like me, you know that the NASS application opened just a few days ago. Quoting from the Summer Seminar site, "PLEASE NOTE: The application is NOT first come, first served. Please gather all of the required information before applying. Applications are now open." I am taking the SAT again on January 21st, and was planning on waiting until I got my scores back in February to use on my application. However, my cousin who went to NASS last year and received his nomination to West Point last November told me that the sooner you get in your application, the better chance you have in getting into Summer Seminar. I received a 1420/1600 when I took the SAT last June, but on my last PSAT I earned a 1470/1520 and so am hoping to score closer to 1500 on my next SAT. What is the veracity of my cousin's statement, and what would you all recommend I do? Thanks so much for your input.

I personally applied to NASS pretty late but still manage to get in. But yes I will listen to your cousin, though it is not first come first serve it will be in your benefit to finish your application early and as for your test scores, you have really good scores (wish I had those) try not to worry about SATs for NASS, I got in only with my PSAT scores, SO DON'T wait until you hit a 1500 before sending in you stuff. Good luck!!

Personally, I literally applied hours before the application closed and got in. Not because I'm lazy, I just did not hear about the program until late in the application process.

I think a lot of the people they accept are those who they believe are either valuable or who are on the fence with the possibility of going to an academy. In other words, the best and the brightest who don't know all details of Navy and Academy. This may be completely wrong, but that's how I thought about it. This is why I think it actually is not "first come first serve," and that they just want to accept the people who are appropriate and match the necessity of NASS, which would be to give a taste of the Academy.

I am in the same boat as nav21. Last year I applied just a day/hours (not sure which) before the deadline after I had already gotten into SLE (which I mentioned in my NASS personal statement). I did it just because I was trying to keep my options open and hadn't seriously considered USNA until just ~2 weeks before the NASS deadline. I was lucky to be accepted to NASS when I was fully expecting to be denied b/c my app was so late.

Nav21 I think is spot on about them wanting people who are curious and want to see if the academy is right for them. I mentioned that in my essay and when I was there it was clear that others were in the same boat as me too.

I've already received and accepted my appointment to USNA so don't stress too much about getting your app in early as it didn't seem to hurt me. FYI: my test scores were similar to yours so don't worry too much about them for your NASS app.

Sounds identical to me FloridaToUSMA2021.. I mentioned how I really wanted to go to USAFA, but was giving Navy a shot. AFASS did not accept me, I ended up finding Naval Academy is better (for me), and I just recently accepted my Navy appointment..

Those scores sound great to me! They're either above or right around 700 on math and reading, correct? I say submit. My son is a current Plebe and daughter is applying to class of 2022, like you. Good luck!

I would consider what the official site says about NASS acceptance over the random opinions of others who really have no idea how people get chosen. NASS is partly a recruiting effort to create interest in USNA among some who might not otherwise have considered it. Many get turned down to NASS and still eventually get an appointment to USNA.

Just to keep those of you who are applying for NASS excited, my DD had an amazing (possibly lifechanging?) time last summer. True, you should not consider it a strong sign that they will accept you but it is a link in the chain to get you there. It doesn't mean everything but it doesn't mean nothing, either. They get their first look at you, your squad leader writes an eval, you take your CFA, etc.. so it is certainly a great step to take if you're even thinking about the USNA. Go for it!

I applied within an hour of applications opening and I actually received an acceptance before the date they predicted... I don't know if it necessarily matters but I know there is a lot of interest in them and they likely fill quickly! I'd apply now.

First time poster here. My son completed his online application to NASS the evening that it opened up. We know a young man in his plebe year, and another who has been accepted for this year. Hopefully the time flies and we hear good news this spring.

I turned in my application 36 min after in opened. I heard in the first round of acceptances. Your scores are good and they know you will keep working on them. Work hard on your personal statement and apply as early as possible before you get into the difficult part of your semester. Applying early also means that it is done and you don't have to worry about it.

USNA website says by April 15th so prepare to hear then. You may* hear earlier but just plan on waiting until the 15th of April.

Same here! I finished my NASS application last year 3 hours after it opened (I worked very fast...probably because I was excited), and heard back well before the predicted reply time. For anyone looking at applying to NASS, I do NOT recommend going as fast as I did because excessive speed, more often than not, leads to mistakes :D

Generally a full third of the incoming class of plebes did not attend summer seminar.

It seems like that point has been made clear, it's still an awesome experience that can clarify a student's goals as well as letting the Academy get a look at them. I didn't even know it was 2/3 that did attend NASS, that's pretty good.

If this helps, last year my DD applied to NASS within a couple days of the application opening. She was accepted on February 23, 2016.
