When is the best time to do an interview? My son is a junior and waiting on AIM, and we are taking the the SAT for the first time in 2 weeks (May 2). I'm kinda waiting on this test score to come back so the interviewer has more of a grasp of my son's achievements. Is it better to do the interview during the summer months or wait until Fall of senior year? -officer

I have no real qualifications to answer this, but I will take a guess anyway....it would seem that summer might be too early, with the current class going through swab summer and prep for the new school year. If your son waited until the application process has begun, and the focus shifted to the upcoming round of applicants, maybe that would be best? Just a guess. My son interviewed in Jan. of Sr. year (too late, IMHO) and then again in December of last year. (better, but still late...). If he had to do it again, I would guess that October might be a good month, prior to the EA deadline.

Again...just my .02. Exciting times for your boy! Good luck.

I interviewed after I had sent in my application for EA. I believe my interviewer said something along the lines of that admissions had told him a little about me already.

Also when trying to schedule my interview they told me the best time to interview was AFTER Part I of my application had been sent in.

"The best time to schedule your interview is after you have submitted the online application, your Standardized Test Scores, and a current high school transcript. The critical information received in the first part of the application process, along with your scores and transcript, allow us to start a file on you. Further, your submission of this information indicates you are serious about applying to the Academy."

Academy Admissions - Interview Process

An admissions interview is an excellent opportunity for you to learn more about the Academy, and for the Academy to learn more about you.
Interviews are optional, but recommended. The interview normally takes about 40 minutes. If your family wishes to attend with you, the interviewer will first meet with you alone, then offer time for your family to ask questions. If you are interested in having an interview, contact your Admissions Officer and they can arrange for an interview with a Coast Guard Academy representative in your area. There is usually a two week waiting period between the date of request and the interview.

Thanks Shellz,

Fall of senior year is what I was thinking too. I just got a little thrown off because after completing the AIM application, it said the next step was to schedule an interview. I know that they don't do interviews for AIM. I think they were just preparing us WAY ahead of time of future things to do for regular admission into USCGA:wink:. -officer

My daughter had her interview in January 2009 ... kinda late in the game
but it was in time since she was deferred from EA.

I agree with the other parents: Schedule the interview as soon as possible after the initial information has been submitted to the Academy.

If the trend continues next year, the appointment process will be even more competitive and every piece of the puzzle of your application will be important.
