What does it mean to go from applicant to candidate status and is it difficult?

From applicant to candidate simply means that you are competitive for an appointment or your file has been been reviewed but no decision made yet. One of the experts on the forum will elaborate what it means to you.

This is from the note at the bottom of the "Applicant Status" box in your portal:
"When USAFA processes your application you become an 'Applicant.' Should USAFA deem you competitive and/or you receive a nomination, you will become a 'Candidate.'"

Basically, from my understanding, this means that USAFA believes you have a greater chance of being accepted based upon your grades/CFA/extracurriculars (WCS). It is the next step in the process and you can be put before the admissions board granted you have a nomination and a complete file.

I haven't taken the ACT yet but have a 3.7 GPA (out of 4) two sport varsity athlete and letter winner along with student council and involvement in multiple clubs, and more. Using this as a baseline, would this be competitive for admission?

Unfortunately no one here can tell you for sure. No one on SAF sits on the board, and there are way more qualified people here than me that will tell you that. If your status changed to competitive, USAFA sees you to be competitive. There are hundreds of "Chance Me" threads on here that you can search and read the comments. You will be receiving the same advice on here that you will see on those. I would suggest taking the ACT ASAP though.

I'm in the same boat you are, waiting to hear about appointments. Good luck!

Have you taken any test at all? If not your chances of getting admission are slimmer than a Nanometer, From my experience I have never heard of anyone that got into any SA without test scores being submitted, maybe someone can prove me wrong. As dancing_falcon said try and take the test ASAP. GOOD LUCK!!

I have a feeling that he is a junior :), let's hope that he isn't a senior and hasn't taken a standardized test;).

I'm a junior, that would be bad if I was a senior haha.

Oh ok! That makes more sense! Since you are a junior and have about a month and a half more until the application for 2022 opens, take the time to keep your grades up, maybe try to hit a 3.9 or 4.0 if that's possible for you (higher GPAs are good to have no matter what school you apply to). Take the standardized tests. Work on your athletics. Maybe try to make captain in your sports. Good luck with everything!

If you submit an application you are an applicant (pretty straight forward). If you meet all the requirements for admission (not appointment) then you make the candidate pool. You can go to the Admissions website to get the list of what is required for admission (it is not long or hard but does disqualify a couple thousand applicants. Once you have completed all requirements and meet the minimum standards set by the admissions committee and have a nomination then you become a qualified candidate who is reviewed by the admissions committee and considered for appointment. The committee will offer a number of admissions with deadlines for accepting. The final number is number of students who accepted and are expected to show up for I Day. Between acceptance and I Day a few will decide to take another path and then another group will decided during BCT 1 to leave and finally a group will decided to leave during BCT 2 so when school actually starts in August the number is usually between 1000 and 1,100.

ZJ, from the limited info you have provided, no one here can give you any indication of your chances.

If you want to assess your own chances without giving us any but the most basic information, please peruse the "chances" threads. How do you think you stack up?
