Hi, my DS has a permanent lower retainer. I know that folks mentioned that he will have to send in his dental xrays. Does West Point require that retainer to be removed before R day? What happens during R day during the dental exam?

Thanks, I asked much the same question recently. We have exactly the same situation with our DS.

Wondering the same, DD just getting her braces off in March and plan was to put permanent retainer. Would like to know before we do so if it will be a problem.

Are you medically qualified by DoDMERB? Typically an orthodontia questionnaire is completed if you have braces or a retainer. You need to certify:
Application for Service Academies: I acknowledge that my orthodontic appliances MUST be removed and all active treatment WILL be completed prior to arriving at the Academy.

Application for ROTC Program(s): I acknowledge that my orthodontic appliances MUST be removed and all active treatment WILL be completed prior to being commissioned at the end of my ROTC Program. Furthermore, “I acknowledge all financial responsibility for my orthodontic treatment and do not hold the military or ROTC responsible.

Retainer appliances are permissible for all applications provided all active treatment has been completed.
Certification: By signing and dating below, I fully understand the acknowledgement statements above.

Does the statement "retainer appliances are permissible for all applications" mean even a permanent retainer is allowed as long as active treatment is complete? The permanent retainer our orthodontist uses is designed to be left in place indefinitely, and I suppose could be replaced with a removable one by our orthodontist if necessary.
