When I interviewed for AFROTC back in December, the commander offered me a scholarship in the spot. I was told that he can only offer one of these a year and I am exactly what the Air Force needs as officers. However, I declined that scholarship because ROTC is only my backup plan incase I don't get a USAFA appointment. In turn, I remained in the ROTC applicant pool.

Today I was notified that I received a type 1 Air Force ROTC scholarship! As far as I know, type 1 is the most prestigious ROTC scholarship (correct me if I'm wrong).

I currently have two nominations to USAFA (Congressman and Senator).

My topic of discussion is this: Due to that fact that I have been offered such prestigious Air Force scholarships and have two nominations, am I very likely to receive a USAFA appointment?

Well not necessarily. There are folks who were tripled nominated and not received an appointment. There is so much more to it, like SAT/ACT scores (which I would assume yours are good), CFA scores, GPA, volunteerism, sports, leadership, etc...

It all comes down to your WCS and who is on that slate with you. At least your Plan B is solid so enjoy the ride. You may not have an answer for a while.

Depending on your stats, I'd either take

The question to be asked is if you accept the AF scholarship, can you later turn it down and take a USAFA appointment. I don't have that answer. If you can, by all means take the offer! I would not feel guilty "taking someone's spot" by accepting the offer and then later giving it back. Others would. IMHO, that would be a business decision that I earned the right to cherry pick my best option.

RE: your odds. What are your stats? While no one can give you an answer for certain, of course the better your stats, the better your odds. I see you are from OH. If you lived in parts of CO or TX or VA for instance, that makes the "chances" harder because those areas are more competitive. But if your stats are great, you are medical qualified, no glaring problems, I'd think your odds are good. If memory serves me right, the 12,000 person applicant pool drops to around 2000 that are medically qualified with a nomination in hand. So statistically speaking, you are already in good shape.

By itself, I think it is safe to assume that getting an AF scholarship won't correlate strongly to having a higher probability for getting into USAFA.

@HardWorker - When you log in there should be a date in which that offer will basically expire. My DS got a Type 7 back in Nov/Dec and he has until 31 May 17 to either accept/decline. There should be a date there in your offer. This way, you have plenty of time to see if you get an appointment. if you don't, you have Plan B. But, do apply to the school in which you would intend to use that scholarship. My DS has already done that and was accepted. This way, if he doesn't get an appointment to the USAFA, USCGA, or USNA or decides on an Academy Prep school should he be offered, he has Plan B addressed and waiting.

@HardWorker actually my situation is so similar I thought it was one of my parents talking about me. I interviewed for AFROTC in December as well and was offered the Commanders Scholarship. Today I was notified that I received a type 1 scholarship.

Naturally, USAFA is my first choice closely followed by USCGA. I recently received an appt there, but still hoping and praying for that USAFA appointment. Like RickD said, I have a backup and don't have to accept until May 1st. You're in a time period where you just have to sit back and see all of these options pan out in front of you.

It's a waiting game from now on. You are obviously competitive!! Best of Luck!!

I have until May 31, 2017 to accept and I have already been accepted into my plan B college.

Man everything you just said is my case exactly, besides the on the spot offer. I thought I was reading my own article for a second

@Jwill35 and @Cdiff

We must all be in the same boat! I feel as if we will get the appointment we are longing for. After all, ROTC and the academy both produce officers for the same Air Force and if they wanted us for ROTC there's no reason for them to want us at USAFA!
