I don't think they have any influence at this point regarding appointment matters, etc.. but DD emailed hers when she got her nomination, he was happy for her.
 
che527, I believe you are a junior. Right now BGOs are swamped with 2021 applicants. If you have a working relationship with your BGO already ask him on his preferred method of communication (format, how often, what triggers an update). If you do not have a working relationship with them, then I would add that to the list of questions for them.

My BGO always asked me to keep him posted, for instance, how I'm doing with the application process and if I've received an appointment with DoDMERB yet.
Then again, I'm the only person from his region applying to the naval academy this year.
Nonetheless keep in touch with him/her, in my experience it is helpful building up a correspondence with them and getting to know them a bit, it really helps when you have to sit the interview with them.

My DD shoots his an email every now and then out of courtesy. He always gets a short, positive response. The BGO does not have any influence at this point however.
