I am attending the usma next fall. I went to my friends house in January and plowed through his batch of marijuana brownies not knowing what they were. Is the drug test on R day a hair test or urine test? Thanks

I am almost positive they do urine tests.

Blood tests and hair tests are simply too expensive. Hair tests being the most expensive. They will only use blood/hair to confirm a urine test in an unclear test.

This guy/gal is a troll trying to spark conversation. No WP candidate is hanging out at pot brownie parties. If you are-better have the back up plan in place.

You'd be surprised by what some cadets do...

If any new cadet or cadet hopeful lives a life that puts him/her in the presence of such stupidity... they have no need to go to the academy. DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY! Go to Berkley if you live by the code of the streets.

many many cadets would be in berkeley right now by that definition of 'code of the streets' , if they were ever in the 'presense of such stupidity'.

having friends who do that, or getting mixed up in situations above ^^^ is not the same reflection of character as those who hit the bong every weekend

thats ironic because most cadets could not get in to UC Berkely.. it is even more selective than USMA

That is a very naive statement, not to mention ignorant. New cadets are still in high school and you cannot expect them to live in a box for the remainder of there time as a civilian. Having fun in high school is as important as anything at this point in his life.

One reason being the disproportionate weight of academics in the admission process. USMA looks for well rounded people, not people who sit all day in their closets with no outside life. Usually USMA has well rounded individuals with not only good academics, but also community service, varsity sports, leadership, and solid grades on top of that.

What you say may be true, but I say the same applies to USMA. Some of the same people who get into Berekly would not make the cut for USMA.

You shouldn't be allowed into USMA if you choose to waste your life with drugs. They are illegal and shows that the candidate/cadet values his/her enjoyment and fun more than the established rules of the united states government. Such a person who cannot abide by the laws set forth by congress should not receive a commission and be given any kind of leadership. If fun is more important than obeying the law then they are not fit to attend a service academy.

UC Berkely accepts almost 25% of their applicants and their bottom base line SAT (mid 50% test scores) are 580 CR and 620 CM, not exactly above any West Point applicant, then factor in the "whole person" concept.

Back on topic, cadets and candidates smoking/eating pot or doing any other drugs should really look elsewhere for their education and career.
In my opinion, for what it's worth, so called recreational use of drugs/alcohol while a minor, shows a character flaw and proclivity for future abuse. There is no place for that in todays Army or Military. Especially for a future leader.

I don't think that's naive at all, I think if a candidate can't even abide by civilian law, how can he be expected to follow the honor code or military law?

Having fun and breaking the law are not the same.

The kind of kid that is brought up without breaking any kind of rules and living life between his suburban house and church group is not the same wild and crazy guy who goes through Ranger school and pushes his body past its limit so he will be better able to kill somebody. Those kind of guys party harder than most. They live life on edge. But when the **** hits the fan, they are the first ones in line to fight, no doubt.

I think

everyone is missing the point where he/she said it was an accident.
One mistake and you shouldn't go to an academy? Lol...

Thank you for not being ignorant like most of the other [redacted] kids who read that. I was at a friends house and ate 100 dollars worth of his brownies oops. You people who are bagging on people who smoke pot don't know what your talking about.. Even though I dont do it myself i know people who do and there is nothing wrong with them and the drug is harmless. I just hope that this mistake wont compromise my appointment. [redacted]

ok this is kind of an ignorant comment. now i have several family members who have gone to USMA and ranger school. i mean my dad was even in the 75th ranger regiment which is a pretty big accomplishment. but the point is that these men who i know are all very moral people who hold themselves to a strict level of conduct. dont go generalizing about how churchgoers dont have what it takes to be successful, its just an ignorant generalization. there is a fine line between having fun and being irresponsible (this situation is just unfortunate cause the person didnt know what they were doing) but really dont start talking about something you really have no understanding of

1) Maximus is a parent. He is not attending the Academy.
2) You haven't even began attending yet and know what it takes to last?
3) The fact the drug is classified as "harmless" by you still doesn't justify it being right. It is against the law. You cannot pick and choose which laws should be followed and which are optional. I am sure nobody wants an officer who will decide when the honor code applies and when it is "harmless" to break it.

Also that statement on church-goers is incorrect. You do not need to break laws in order to become "hardcore". I don't do drugs or drink but that doesn't make me less capable of killing someone for my country. I push my body to the limit in a healthy manner. I don't destroy it with illegal subtances.

Sure, mistakes happen. But if you do not realize what you did was wrong and try to justify yourself by saying "we're all human" then you need to re-eveluate the way you look at things. Although everyone makes mistakes this should not be used as a reason to justify them. (ie. Killing someone accidentally is still considered a crime.)
