Watched the movie last night. Loved it! 5 star! It is amazing what the human spirit can do when confronted with such unbelievable conditions. I liked the conscientious objector spin to it too; made it different and interesting. Would have been an honor to meet Cpl Doss.

If you haven't seen it, then what are you waiting for?

It is an outstanding movie that I recommend everyone see.

On a related note my son is a fairly new 2nd Lt Comms Officer in Okinawa. He has never been able to pull his whole platoon of 62 Marines together at one time because elements are always out on loan to other units that need Comms capability. He did manage, though, to scare up $400 from some USMC pot of money and got 40+ of them together for a day of work and "fun". They PT'ed in the morning doing stretcher carries and buddy carries. Had a cookout for lunch and then watched Hacksaw Ridge, with a leadership discussion after. I thought it was a pretty creative way, and theme, to get everyone together and also focus on Okinawa military history. Got some "points" for it in his fitrep too.

Sounds like your son put together a great day for his Marines. I agree this is a great movie, it's amazing to realize just how many stories have gone untold, it's great when one like this gets further attention.

Now, I have to add that it's also amazing that he could get 40+ Marines to watch a movie about an Army soldier, I can only imagine that there were at least a couple that commented after the movie...."Wait, the Army fought in the Pacific??"

Nice job your son did.

Very kind of you... and I bet you're right about "Wait, the Army fought in the Pacific??"

EDIT: OTOH, I would say they didn't watch a movie about an Army soldier.... they watched a movie about a Medal of Honor recipient.

Has he taken any of the battlefield tours on the island? We took a couple when we were stationed there, and they were great.
As for the movie, I am in the obvious minority and don't think that it was that great. Fabulous story, but too much CGI, some fanciful battle scenes, and didn't look like Okinawa. But I'm picky about movies. As respects war movies, I prefer the movie Gibson starred in earlier: We Were Soldiers. As for the battle at Okinawa, Eugene Sledge's book With The Old Breed is fantastic.
Your son is lucky - Okinawa was our favorite Place to be stationed. Wonderful people, great food, and beautiful scenery. Hope he's getting off base to enjoy the island.

I don't know if he has done any battle field tours but I expect he has. I do know he's been to at least one of the castles, a few beaches, some nearby islands, and done some spear fishing. He flew to Tokyo to celebrate New Years and did a pub crawl. He's always one the lookout for new adventures and new beers to drink. He's got some official rating in the beer world and has several thousand followers on some beer blog. They actually pay him to drink beer and post reviews now. Who knew?
