Would nipple piercings have to be taken out to go to the academy? The order states anything that can be seen in pt gear and those can't be seen. Also would I be able to get my ears pierced while at the academy after Plebe summer?

Take them out. And yes you can get your ears pierced. USNA has regs on allowable earrings for uniforms.

I hope this isn't too politically incorrect, but, you have your nipples pierced but not your ears? I must be out of touch.

I've been mostly on the USMA forum lately, but thought I would come over here to stir up some Army/Navy banter. This thread is ripe for that, but I will resist.

Yea crazy right lol

In-uniform (key caveat) ear piercing location for the wear of female officer gold ball studs of the prescribed diameter is the traditional center of the lobe location, not anywhere else on the ear. When on town liberty in civvies, other rules apply. There are always regs about this kind of thing, and there will be briefs. Of course, plebes are in uniform on town liberty, so it's a moot point for a long period of time.

Though the move is being made to the appearance of more gender-neutral uniforms in the form of male-style covers and
male-style service dress white uniform jacket for women, I do not believe there has been a move toward offering men the opportunity to wear earrings in uniform or to remove the option for women, in the pursuit of this goal. Trying to type this with a straight face.

Capt MJ or NavyHoops- In the Navy, is the wear of earrings dependent on uniform?

In the Army earrings cannot be worn with ACU's or PT uniform but can with Class A and B (service, dress, and mess) uniforms. Getting ears pierced after joining the Army is difficult because you can't wear the earrings for extended periods required to keep the holes open initially.

Not sure on Navy regs for utilities. Brushed gold, small in diameter were allowed in pretty much everything. Mess dress we could wear small pearl studs.

Actually, each of the services has different earring regulations. The Air Force's earring policy includes pearls, silver & gold studs and diamond studs.
I recommend a hard look at the service regulations on body piercings but I suspect that nipple piercing is completely out. However, if the holes are established then a person could do what he or she wanted on his or her personal time--albeit easier outside of the academy environment.

Well, a 17 or 18 yr old girl that has pierced nipples (who's gonna see um?) may get culture shock at the academy, especially the first year. If you're such a free spirit, have you thought this whole military thing out?

I'd have to consult current Navy Uni and Grooming Regs. I think there are certain uniforms they are not worn with - it's been awhile. I usually wore allowed earrings with dress and "office" uniforms. I didn't wear them around the flight line or down and dirty situations, one less thing to worry about and avoided any chance of small metal things falling into big metal things.

I got my ears pierced in between PCS moves early on, so I could wear the starter earrings and keep them clean while the holes healed during three weeks of leave driving to the next duty station. I hadn't had them growing up (nerdy tomboy me) but realized after a tour in Naples, Italy, all those lovely 28kt gold earrings were for pierced ears.

Oh Maplerock...you are showing your age. It is a new day--and the services have always attracted young men and women who like to take risks. Look at the evolving tattoo policies. However, you are right that EASis might raise a few eyebrows and be the subject of a little chatter amongst her peers if she showered with piercings in-but I bet she has the good sense to follow the policy and is up for the challenge if she is selected by the admissions committee and approved by DODMERB. It is true we are a relatively conservative crew, after all we are the establishment, but in honor of LTG Moore's passing...'We were soldiers once and young...'

I'm active duty, have been for three years. It hasn't bothered me yet.

You're right. If I receive an appointment, I plan on taking them out.
