Boys State

Yes , the SA'S look at it from a leadership standpont. I would personaly call your State Department American Legion and see if or where you are on a wair list if any.

I don't believe there is a waiting list, but if the guy selected for Boys' State is unable to go, you would step into his place. It does happen because of sports conflicts, other travel plans, etc. In the meantime, be looking for other leadership opportunities.

I think it could possibly count for something. Call your MALO and ask what you should do. I remember from the application there was a section where you could write notes about your leadership experience. I would write down that you were selected as an alternate. Someone obviously saw leadership potential in you
In the meantime, definitely call the American Legion that appointed you and ask where you stand. If you can get yourself in there, I would highly recommend it. I went to Girl's State last summer and it was soo much more than a leadership opportunity for a resume. It is an amazing and inspiring experience

I've heard it being equal to Eagle Scout.

The argument goes both ways... there's that leadership potential, but than again, an alternate isn't going and won't get the leadership experience from it.

As mentioned before, see if you can get in still.

thanks alot for the great feedback guys  im going to try and see what i can do

My son just found out he is a boys state alternate. He is disappointed, and the chances of him going are slim, but he really wants to go. Does anyone know if he can look at other Legion Posts to support him? Or go out of state? Thanks.

I would go and speak to the local legion commander. Last year, the slots for girls state that my local post sponsors were allocated by 11th grade guidance counselors. The slots were given to good kids, but without regard for those girls having an interest in attending a service academy. I approached our legion commander and explained my daughters interest in attending the USMA and that attending Girls State would help her application. He made a few calls and another slot was secured. Now my wife is in charge of the Girls State selection committee at our post. It ensures slots are allocated to young ladies who have an interest in serving.

My son went last year because I called around and found a post without A candidate.

Going to BS or GS out of state is possible. My DD did it. If the neighboring / other state's time lines up, they have openings, and if your local ALA can sponsor your DS it can happen.

Sometimes you may have the option to pay the fee because versus being sponsored by a local chapter.
