Good day,

I have been accepted to both Mass and Suny maritime academies (waiting on usmma). Have visited both schools and like them very much. The programs seem very similar. Can anyone with insight into these academies help to enlighten me on the differences, or the strengths of either that might help me to form an educated decision?

Thanks

BigJ- I don't have any first hand experience at either Mass Maritime or SUNY Maritime, though my Dad and Uncle are both NY alums and a good friend of mine is a Mass Maritime grad and we have a couple of Mass Maritime Engineers here. From what I can see- I don't think you could go wrong at either- both have a great post graduation employment record, both have a strong licensing program with very strong relationships in the Maritime Industry both afloat and ashore, and both have very strong relationships for engineers with Power Companies (Con Edison, etc...). Location is certainly something to consider- Buzzards Bay (entrance to Cape Cod) or Throggs Neck ( The Bronx- NYC).
AF6872 has a son who graduated from Mass Maritime- so I'm bumping this along hoping he will give you some thoughts.

bigJ our DD was accepted at both schools and we live close to the Mass Maritime school. The major difference between the schools is where the training cruises go to-other than that, like bruno stated, you can't go wrong at either school. SUNY's cruises are abroad while MMA goes to the Caribbean during our winter in the northeast. Also, SUNY has a non-regiment component to it while that is NOT an option at MMA. Both excellent schools. Good luck!

Any Maritime School is great. Just remember you get that unlimited license at the end. Son loved Mass since it was more regimented than some of the others. Good Luck.

Anyone know anything about Maine maritime academy? They offer NROTC that's what I know

I don't know much about SUNY. We visited Maine Maritime Academy while doing college visits a couple of years ago - very impressive place. We also checked out Mass Maritime and DS of a good friend just graduated from Mass Maritime (got a job right away). Both are great schools and should get you to the same end result. For a MA resident, tough to beat the Mass Maritime cost versus Maine.

Definitely visit both, if interested. Maine Maritime is in a beautiful area, but kind of isolated. Mass is at the entrance to Cape Cod and in a busier area. Maine offers both regimented and non-regimented lifestyle options, Mass only regimented. Both will get you a great education but very different places to live for 4 years.

I went there for a year. Was in the regiment and did NROTC. Stayed close with a lot of people there so if you have questions about it I can answer them or find answers for you.
