I got accepted to USAFA Summer Seminar about a month ago. How much does Summer Seminar factor into your acceptance to the academy? I have a 3.91 GPA, 1540 SAT, National Honor Society secretary, violin teacher, concertmaster of my orchestra, intern on a Senate campaign, 6 AP classes so far, a Junior Leadership charity program, got accepted to Girls State. I'm homeschooled, so no sports (although I do Crossfit 5/week and going to compete next year) - I know that's where I'm really deficient - my ALO didn't think that was going to be a HUGE problem though. Do I have any chance of getting in?
Also, I have a peanut allergy that's not severe. Is that going to be a problem (make it less likely for me to get accepted)? I haven't had a reaction in over a year and the reactions aren't severe - not anaphylactic or anything like that. I make peanut butter sandwiches for the kids I babysit and my family eats peanut butter and stuff around me all the time. The only way it affects me is if I actually eat peanuts and even then it's not serious. But I'm concerned I'd have to write that down on my application or my doctor will have to report it.
I don't have any experience with military and I'm kind of nervous about this, so any reply would be great. Thanks.

I understand the summer seminar is primarily a recruiting tool for USAFA to get people interested who might not be otherwise. From what I understand, food allergies can be a problem. You need to get that cleared up with your allergist. The bottom line is, don't lie. It will catch up with you. I wouldn't worry about not being sports as long as you have an active fitness program and can describe it to them. You also need to be involved with leadership and community service opportunities.

Hope this helps...

I had similar stats and was a homeschooler (I did triathlon for my sport) and got in to all 3. I did not do any of the Summer Seminars - it seems to be more of a recruitment tool than an indicator of admission. Make sure you highlight your leadership in your application - I had a lot of CAP-related activities under my belt including top leadership positions. Other than crossfit competitions, you could also check out local club sports or lifting competitions, etc. if you have the time.

I'll let one of the more experienced people (FencersMom, etc.) talk about allergies.

No I won't lie on my application! I don't want them to keep me out because of it but I would never lie about it.
Thanks for your input! Any ideas of how to get more community service/leadership?

summer seminar won't make or break a candidate. It should let you know if it's a Y or N though.

Allergies - be up front and then start pushing for a DODMERB waiver if required AND follow through that it gets reviewed or you get options. You can see my DD's situation w/ a medical DQ at "waiver anxiety".

good luck

BTW - that's based on what/how they train us as liaison officers in regards to summer seminar.
