Does anyone ever get a waiver for chronic hives?

My daughter has it all--the entire package. (Including impressive ROTC leadaership experience). We are waiting on our DODMERB letter (conditional acceptance) from 2 service academies. She has chronic hives that are completely controlled by a non-sedating medication. Has anyone heard of a student getting a waiver for this. I know God has a plan, and I am leaning on my faith, but it's still tough. Thanks.

No one on this board can tell you what DODMERB will or will not do with your DD. My suggestion is to contact DODMERB directly and be prepared to provide them documentation from your doctor that this is a non issue. You're best off to fight this out with DODMERB directly rather than just wait for a waiver. By being proactive you will give your DD that best opportunity to get past this issue.

Thanks. We are waiting to see what the letter says when it arrives....

My DD also has received a DQ for a skin condition although hers hasn't been an issue since she was little. She has received conflicting advice for how to deal with this. Some have told her to be patient and wait for a waiver request and provide what is asked for. Others have told her she should provide information to DODMERB in advance. This is all new to us, what are your thoughts?

I don't think it could hurt to provide evidence to them that it is no longer an issue before they make their decision.

DODMERB is the overall authority on all things medical. They have phone numbers and people that you can discuss your son or daughters case with. They will accept medical evidence that your local physicians send them to back stop your case. DODMERB is where you fight the medical DQ. Especially if you have a LOA that needs to have the medical DQ resolved you fight it out with DODMERB. Be aggressive as time is short before the final appointment decision are made.

Waiting for a waiver from Navy medical is a passive position. Navy medical reviews a DODMERB decision and can choose to override. Typically these are for simple DQ such as glasses or other minor medical issues. Sometimes the waiver comes a lot of times it does not. The key point is you have no input in this process. The decision will be made by someone that is reading a file and making a choice.

Thank you for this feedback! My DD had contacted DODMERB immediately after receiving her DQ. Their advice was to wait until the USNA put forth a waiver request.

I think she will be addressing this immediately rather than waiting!
