Scholarships 2017

There will be more campus based scholarships offered as the Army is expanding.
thanks - campus based is really the way to go for the services. Allows the PMS to evaluate the individual and his/her motivation and qualifications before investing scarce scholarship resources. I certainly understand the benefit to individuals of 3 and 4 year grants to high school students looking at enourmous college costs. But I never quite understood the benefit to the services of offering the 4 year scholarship to individuals who are 18 years old before they had an opportunity to perform. So many young persons change their minds during college years.

The ORSA guys at Cadet Command had explained to us that the HS 4YR winners have a higher rate of commissioning than those cadets who did not get a 4 YR scholarship.

I'm wondering if a lot of scholarships will be given out in the third board, knowing that Trump wants to expand the military. Do you think this will have any effect?

Gosh, this is kind of surprising, given that it is my understanding that fewer 4 years are now being awarded and more emphasis was on 3 year AD's.

I thought the direction for the Army was "try before you buy" with the 3 year AD scholarships.

Just curious, @MohawkArmyROTC , did ORSA offer any speculation on the statistical results?

Off OP topic - sorry.

MohawkArmyROTC - Do the studies indicate better retention beyond initial commitment? 4 year scholarship vs. USMA vs other (3yr/2yr/G2G/non scholarship).

I prefer the the try before you buy option as that gives us more control to who we award scholarships, but they showed us numbers that showed that the 4 YR winners had greater commissioning and promotion rates. However, the 4 Winners are the top 1000, so that does make sense. The Army gives a lot more scholarships in the 2-3 year range as it allows them to spread more money around. If they give more than 1000 4YRs it would dilute their stats.

They may have offered some speculation, but I do not recall as it was in MAR of 2016.

I expect that they have those numbers, but I do not know what they are. Anecdotally, I would say ROTC scholarship winners have higher retention beyond the initial commitment than USMA, but I have no facts to support that assumption.

There will not be any extra scholarships given out after the third board, than what was already planned. The push right now is to get additional scholarship money for Mission Set 2019 (cadets who commission between OCT 2018 and SEP 2019).

What about those commissioning in the class of 2021? I know Trump's defense budget proposal will take one or two years to actually go into effect, and takes time so I'm wondering if the army is expanding by then too.

The PMS at the school my son is going to go to next year informed us that 70% of the 4 year awardees at their school do not contract.

Wow, that is a really low percentage. Did they give any indication as to why that is the case there?

Your son's school sounds very atypical.

I have been at my current school since 2013 and we have contracted a little over 90% of our 4YR scholarship winners, 3 YRs are probably around 75% contracted. Although, not all of our 4YR winners commission. We lose a few here and there to disenrollments or transfers to USMA. The only two that haven't contracted were due to not being able to become medically qualified.
