Need Clarification: Attending USAFA Prep School with MOC Nomination

Hi Everyone -
Our DD received a MOC nomination in late Dec., 2016, followed by an offer/appointment to the USAFA Prep School, Class of 2018. We are so proud of her!

Can someone please help clarify and confirm that after she successfully completes the ten-month PS program, our DD will NOT need another nomination. We see a lot of ambiguity surrounding this topic on various forums. There's no clear differentiation between civilian students who recently received their MOC nomination (just prior to PS acceptance) and Air Force enlisted members who applied directly to the Prep School via Air Force Form 1786, got accepted, and therefore still need to obtain a nom.

Moreover, the USAFA Prep site states the following:

"Note that cadet candidates do not need a nomination in order to attend the prep school. They will, however, need nominations in order to gain an appointment to the Academy the following year."

Again, "Cadet candidates" could mean either one -- civilian or enlisted, and there's no info regarding current nom. recipients. We are under the impression that her current nomination will automatically carry through/apply to a subsequent, successful USAFA appointment and transition up to the Hill. Please let us know if this assumption is correct. If not, at what point during the PS program would she need to contact her MOC, does she have to go through the entire nom. process again, or is it easier than before?

Thank you kindly for your time and consideration!

A nomination is not needed or required for the Prep school (USAFA prep or Falcon Foundation). A nomination will be needed for her entry into USAFA. She will need to apply to all available Nom sources again for next year.

+1 to hoops
They are required to APPLY for a MOC nomination, they do not need to receive a nomination.

This is dated I realize but... I attended the USAFA PS 1983-84. I did not have to get another nomination to attend the academy. That being said I did have a nomination before going to the PS. No one I knew of in my preppie class had to get another nomination. Of course those rules may have changed by now.

Thank you for the reply! I'm curious whether or not Cadet Candidates who successfully complete USAFA PS ever have difficulties in acquiring that second MOC nomination? Moreover, is MOC notified by USAFA Admissions that the prospective appointee (in this case, our DD) has been appointed Prep, is now attending and, therefore, will be seeking another nom.? It seems that the rate of prep-school graduates that go on to get USAFA appointments is consistently high, which leads me to believe that it's typically not an issue. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your reply! That's really what we were hoping for. One less thing to worry about. :)

I just looked at the USAFA website....it states the following:

Really? Your going to rely on anonymous advice from someone on an internet forum based on an experience they had 33 years ago? Personally I think NavyHoops is correct based on my reading on this forum. However, I would think you can easily confirm this through a call to the Prep School. Due diligence.

Nice response... I offered no advice. Only stated what my situation was... I'm sure you can offer more based on your personal experience attending the PS.

No problem with your post, and I fully agree with your last (ignoring the part about my experience). Just thought someone was immediately swallowing it hook, line, and sinker, and one should always work to confirm information on an anonymous forum through other sources as well. Of course the other alternative is to err to the conservative/safe side and assume one needs a nomination. If you're wrong with that assumption, so much the better. If you're correct, then you've planned for worse case.

One common piece of advice I have noticed in similar "prepster need new nom" threads is that the rising prepster should get as much done in advance for the next nom cycle as possible, before reporting to either SA prep, sponsored prep or even college. They will be busy and likely a distance from home.

Q: Do I need to apply/re-apply for a nomination?

A: YES! ALL Cadet Candidates, including prior enlisted and those who did not apply for a nomination, will have to apply/re-apply for a nomination during the first quarter. Directions on this process will be provided, but it is up to each Cadet Candidate to complete their individual application per the District and State Representative’s guidance.

Copied this off the USAFA FAQ site.

Wow! I was merely thanking the kind gentleman for his input and for taking the time to respond; just as I am thanking you for your response ... Of course we will confirm with PS. We still like to hear what people who have been through the process have to say about the topic of PS appointees with current noms in place. Have a good day.

Yes: I totally agree. This makes sense and seems like really good advice.

It would be great to know how the original poster's DD's experience went and how the nomination process actually worked for her at the prep school.
