Did not get into SLE

I applied for SLE within the first week is open, and I have yet to hear from admissions to see if I got in. Reading the other threads, I figured that the majority of spots have been filled already.
So, this only makes me want to go to West Point even more. Any pointers on what to do in order to prove the admissions team wrong?
Thanks.

Our RC said that it was harder to get accepted to SLE than into West Point. Don't be discouraged, keep working hard. Retake the ACT or SAT as much as possible to increase your scores. If you really want the appointment, then give it your best shot. Give 100% in all that you do.

I've said that a gazillion times. Not attending SLE is no big deal. The only real advantage to attending SLE is to see, touch, smell WP. Also you'll be able to open your file a few weeks earlier and take an official CFA. Try going to Boys/Girls State if they are still accepting application.

SLE is not an application prerequisite

I don't know about the whole "competitiveness of SLE vs. West Point", but I got into SLE 2 weeks after applying last year and I'm deemed not competitive in the application process because my area is competitive. If you have questions about SLE, feel free to PM me, but I agree that Boys/Girls State is more important. It'll contribute to your leadership points in the WCS. Best way to improve competitiveness though is test scores. Hope this helps :)

There is still a chance to be accepted. The deadline is not until April 1. I applied on the first day and haven't heard anything.

My DD applied to SLE and was not taken in so she applied for USCGA's AIM program (equivalent to SLE) and was accepted. First week of August, she received an LOA and was in the first wave of appointees last January. There's hope ...

I didn't get into SLE last year but I got an appointment with that wave of 500 back in January. My advice is don't get down about it if you don't get in and do EVERYTHING you can to strengthen your file and talk to your RC, they are extremely helpful. I was in constant contact with my RC end of Junior and still am right now. If you don't get in don't try to analyze why, instead come up with an action plan on how you will make your file as competitive as possible for an appointment.

SLE, AIM, NASS and the Air Force summer experience (don't know that acronym) are all recruiting tools. Yes, it means you are generally what they are looking for and it does give you a shot at a LOA. But if they are sure they have you, they are more likely to give that billet to a likely candidate that's on the fence, or too far away for a CVW. DS got tapped for NASS two weeks after applying, but wasn't picked up for SLE or AIM. We are from Michigan, so maybe the Navy needed to have more warm bodies from our area.

When we did our college tour in the summer between his sophomore and junior year, we hit USCGA, USMA and USNA. The lieutenant at the Coast Guard said the summer candidates fall into three categories: zealots, tourists, and prisoners. They are actually shooting for the tourists - those that aren't entirely convinced but interested enough for a good, long look. I always liked that imagery.

When I applied to SLE I looked like this:

32 composite score ACT
Model UN Officer with awards
JV and Varsity lacrosse with scholar athlete awards
Interpreter for mission trip to Honduras, mission trip assistant coordinator for return trip
Church group officer
National Honor Society
Spanish Honor Society
Self-taught multilingual (Spanish, French, Louisiana Creole, some Italian, some Portuguese, some Mandarin)
And some other nice things that aren't as big

And on April 12, 2016 I opened my portal and saw I was not selected.

In the very last three hours that the Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS) application was open I applied and got in. I got selected for NASS and went and had a great time. For a while I was discouraged from seeking out USMA but my Blue and Gold officer encouraged me to look at all my options. When summer was over USMA was my number one pick and I got notified I was the principal nominee of one of my Senators to USMA. My profile hadn't changed all that much when I applied for nominations, though. SLE serves a lot of different purposes and one of those purposes is marketing and letting kids try things out. If they see that you are a great kid from a military family in a military location with a lot passion for USMA and the Army then you might not get selected because they feel like you'll apply to West Point no matter what. But that other kid who might be on the fence about it might get the push to carry through with the whole process because SLE was the experience they needed. Apply to all of the summer seminars you could afford if you got in. I'm pretty sure even some military colleges like the Citadel and VMI have "summer seminar." Show your passion and determination! I got a p-nom and an appointment and I didn't get into SLE. Don't sweat it!
