Video Camera policy for plebes?

I've seen many videos on Yoututbe titled "Semester 1 at the Academy" or "Sea Trials" GoPro style, often appearing from the point of view of Plebes. My mother is an avid photography hobbyist, particularly to my sports and other activities (of course) and now with less than 4 months to I day she's starting to get a bit emotional. We watched a few of these videos together and she said she would not mind buying me a small video camera to record videos to create small compilations of my days. Is there anywhere to reference specific policy regarding the extent of this? Of course I would not be filming at innapropriate times such as class or formation; I'm just curious when and how much I actually am allowed to film.

Wait until after PS, and figure it out as you watch upper class, ask questions and learn the regulations and policy. You will be on a military installation in an active duty status. Don't take one to I-Day; follow all guidance on what you are allowed to take. Once the academic year starts, you will be even busier in a different way than PS, and you will learn the mid way of life.

Nice thought, just do the homework when you are there, from official sources. Send your mom texts and selfies as you can, make use of the phone calls you will be allowed over PS, and continue the practice of actual calls (hearing your voice is a gift) on a regular basis during the ac year.

Thank you sir. Do you know the phone call policy during Plebe Summer? Is it once a week for a few minutes?

You'll give up your phones, and you will get them handed back for phone calls home. It's not once a week. One of the parents of recent Plebes will probably post how it was in the past. Few minutes, yes.

I happen to be a ma'am, but I appreciate the courtesy, and you're welcome.

Oh my goodness. I am completely embarrassed and sincerely apologize that I made such an abrupt assumption. Thank you so much for the help but once again I apologize.

Ha ha ha! Not as embarrassed as I was after private messaging ktnatalk and having these heartfelt, woman to woman chats with HIM! And I thought Hoops was a guy for the longest time.... well, now that I think about it, pretty much everyone on the forum is the opposite gender of what I thought they were. So please don't feel embarrassed or alone. For the record, My husband swears I'm a chick

My Plebe got a GoPro last Christmas, and he's been allowed to use it for recording D&B performances at basketball games (he plays drums) and some other random things within his company, and sometimes he wears it when he goes for an early-morning run. He says he'll probably get some use out of it this summer during his cruise and maybe during NOLS (he's doing Alaska mountaineering, so I'm not sure how he'll get batteries charged, a concern that pales in comparison to spending 3 weeks without toilet paper).

During your plebe year, a lot depends on what rules your company leadership put in place. Some companies are more lenient than others, with regard to media. However, as someone else has said, it will absolutely not be permitted during Plebe Summer. And early in your Plebe year, you'll most likely be so preoccupied with keeping your head above water that using a GoPro will be low on your list of priorities.

We need another Mid to make more videos like Naptown Funk!

Please no....perhaps I am too old school, but didn't like it. Also, keep in mind that everything that gets posted online remains accessible forever. There is a video out there with a current Midshipman celebrating Service Selection, and many (including myself) find it embarrassing to USNA and the Navy. My recollection is the video prominently displayed the name of the ship he was going to, so I am sure it will be waiting for him.

I realize that this is a different era, but I am glad video cameras weren't so accessible in my day...

My son is going to Alaska, too. Already looking at solar chargers for the GoPro. Having 19 hours of daylight should help!

Yep...not an issue. My kid did that NOLS Alaska trip last summer with a GoPro and it worked out great.

Three quick calls over the course of 6 weeks. Believe me, everything stopped for those calls :). It was very reassuring to be able to talk to my son and hear that he was okay.
I appreciate now that he can and does call either dh or I every couple of days.

@WonderGirl1965, just to be clear, you made my day the day you told me you thought I was a mom. I took that as the highest form of flattery! :thumb:

Mom or dad, you are still part of my forum trifecta! You, MJ and Hoops have helped me and so many others cope with all of this stress! The waiting was killing me until I started to internalize your advice. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you, Wondergirl! You are too kind. I am just doing what I can to help. You put me amongst the legends and I am truly flattered.
