I have just received a type 7 scholarship from AFROTC HQ. Am I right in saying that if I go to the University of Pittsburgh (I live in PA) then it will be a full 4 year scholarship but if I attend Virginia Tech it will turn into a 3 year scholarship??

Congrats! Yes you'd have to request to convert to a Type 2 to use for three years in VA and it would not start until sophomore year from what we understand. A letter with more info should be available when you log on to the website.

Thank you! And yes I will do some more research!

Congrats man! Just received mine here in Illinois! Still hoping to gain an appointment to the USAFA though!

First off congrats!

HQ AFROTC will send you the paperwork to convert it to a 3 yr Type 2. I can't recall, but I believe it is later on @May or so when you tell them what college you will be matriculating to come fall. At that point you will state that you want to convert it to a type 2.

It will not start until your sophomore year. Beware if you took your DoDMERB this summer than come your sophomore year it might not be valid anymore for contracting purposes. This is more prevalent for candidates that are applying both to the SA and ROTC. IE you take it August 15th 2015. You convert the scholarship to a 3 yr., you report to school Aug 17,2017 for contracting. Your DoDMERB is no longer valid, because even though you accepted it back in 2016, you did not contract until 2 days after the 2 yr. marker for DoDMERB. Thus, they will make you re-do the DoDMERB before you can officially contract in 2017. That means no stipend, no book reimbursement and most importantly no tuition paid until that new exam is submitted, accepted and processed.
~ Depending on the college they may "lock" your account. What this means is when it comes to registering for spring and since they have not received the money, you can't register until they clear your account.

Just giving a craniums up for anyone that is considering converting to a 3 yr type 2.

The other thing to remember is that most colleges will increase tuition at least 5% per yr. if you are lucky! Many will hit you with 10% increase, but you can't depend on AFROTC to increase their limit while you are in college. So if right now for 2015-2016 tuition costs 15K for OOS, next yr it maybe 16,250, and by the time you get to your sophomore year you could be at 18K. In turn that means by your junior and senior yr the tuition could be over 20+ on a good day (5-7% increase), bad day and it could be 25K, while AFROTC is still at 18K. You will have to make up the difference.
~ Just saying that you should place the financial aspect into the equation when you are making that final decision. Can you afford to go to that school if not selected for Summer Field Training (SFT) or paying out of pocket.
~~ AFROTC scholarships are what we call here 2+2. IOWS, it is guaranteed for the 1st 2 years, but if not selected for SFT, than they have the right to disenroll you from the program. Disenrollment = loss of the scholarship, and at that point you have 2 years under your belt at the college, but now will be paying OOS on your complete dime.
~~~ VT is an amazing unit. Chances of not being selected are very low. Typically they beat the national average for selection. I am just saying this for lurkers or other posters that will be going scholarship.
Thank you! And thank you for the helpful information. I will definitely be using it in the future!
Thanks and Congrats as well! And same situation here....still waiting on USAFA haha
I heard from a few of my buddy's that are cadets, that if you receive a ROTC scholarship that most the time you'll receive an appointment
Congratulations TK!
You should be proud of you accomplishment. I can't offer advice on which college to select, but either way I'm certain you'll be a credit to the US Air Force and the USA.
Well done.
I really appreciate it! Thank you! It's been a dream of mine to serve our nation. I can't wait to see what the future holds.
I doubt it. I mean I'd understand that most of Type 1 scholarship recipients get appointments but Type 7 is more common and usually a fallback plan for most cadets.
TKonek, here is the answer from the congratulations letter, noting the limit for out-of-state is $18K:
Our policy on the Type 7 scholarship requires that you use your Type 7 scholarship at an AFROTC affiliated public school where you qualify for that school's in-state tuition rate. For those not qualifying for a public school's in-state tuition rate, we do not allow Type 7 designees to use the scholarship and pay the difference. However we know some Type 7 designees desire to attend out-of-state schools. Upon activation of the 4-Year, Type 7 scholarship you will also receive an allowance for textbooks and at least a $300 monthly stipend during the school year. To accommodate these desires, we do allow Type 7 designees to convert the 4-Year, Type 7 scholarship to a 3-Year, Type 2 scholarship. The Type 2 designee can attend any AFROTC affiliated school, regardless of the tuition amount. If the annual tuition exceeds $18,000, the student is responsible for the difference. The 3-Year, Type 2 scholarship can be activated at the beginning of the sophomore year, although the student must be a full-time student and must attend AFROTC their freshman year at the same school where they intend to activate their scholarship.
You have until 31 May 2016 to accomplish this. FAILURE TO DO SO BY 31 MAY 2016 WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF YOUR SCHOLARHSIP. Also, we have also posted useful information on our website at http://www.afrotc.com/locator . This provides a listing of the AFROTC affiliated schools with in-state and out-of-state tuition rates, the technical majors approved by the Air Force at each school and there is a link showing additional financial subsidies many AFROTC-affiliated school provide to AFROTC scholarship student to help with tuition and/or room and board costs.
I'm just repeating exactly what a cadet 2 and cadet 1 have said. But at the same time, I can't remember where I saw the statistics but something like 95% of academy applicants also apply for an ROTC scholarship to the same branch, upon saying that the academy its self has said that the chances of getting an appointment if you're a "qualified candidate" ( medically, physically and academically) has been around 50% in the recent years, it's assumed that with the reception of nominations the chance would go up. Anyways, even if you were to be selected for a type 7 it would still put you in around the top 10% of applicants so if you can even receive a type 7 AFROTC (which is the pickiest) then you should have a fairly decent chance of receiving appointment. I know from visiting my friends that a lot of the people in both of their squadrons received type 7s
I agree with Stevenson. A type 1 and 2 make up @20% of all scholarships. Type 7 is 80%.
I get your friends opinion Bradyl, but as someone that has been here for years, I would say that although it is a good sign, I wouldn't be packing my bags for BCT quite yet.
1. AFROTC and USAFA do not use the same system, and nor do they talk when they do their selections.
~ USAFA uses superscore. Some people their best sitting is close to their superscore, and for others they can get their superscore much higher than their best sitting.
~ AFROTC is national from the get go, and your intended major is a factor in their decision. 85% of all AFROTC scholarships go tech. Statistically, only 5% of the type 1 recipients go to non tech. Numbers wise that is @2-3 in total out of the 800+ awarded.
~ CFA is different than the PFA.
2. Nominations impact appointments.
~ IE if your MoC uses principal method, and you don't get the principal, than you and the other remaining candidates on the slate will go to the pool.
~~ 535 of the 1350+/- appointments are MoCs, plus 100 Presidential. By the time you add in ROTC and Sec, you are @50% of all appointments.
~~~ Now remember there are @3000 candidates with noms. That leaves a lot getting a TWE.

Just saying, I get you might have wanted to cheer them on, but to me that was giving way too much false hope to any poster or lurker....just ask flieger and Christcorp. They will tell you they have seen candidates get the "We're sorry at this time we are unable to ..." letter from AFROTC and get and appointment. They have seen candidates get a scholarship, but the same type of letter from USAFA.

Bradyl,

I get where you are coming from, but your math is fuzzy.

1. Yes, 90-95% of all USAFA recipients apply for AFROTC as plan B, but what you forget is that you can't say that 90-95% of AFROTC candidates apply to USAFA as their plan B.
~ Look around here on all of the ROTC threads, NROTC and AROTC included. Many do not apply to the SA, just ROTC because they don't want that type of lifestyle for college, or they have always had a specific college in mind.
~~ As stated earlier HQ AFROTC does not talk to USAFA, they have no idea if they did or did not apply to USAFA or for that fact any other SA/ROTC option.

2. AFROTC has @ the same selection rate as USAFA. 16-18% from the applicant pool. My data is a yr or 2 old, but AFROTC had 5000+ applicants and awarded 900 scholarships. That same year USAFA offered 1350+ appointments.
~ Using your math, and let's assume 75% of them applied for an appointment, and accepted it, that would mean @600+ scholarships were never used and thrown back in the pot.
~~ There are more than 300 nationwide as freshmen on scholarship.
~~~ Using my Math, AFROTC commissions @2000 every year, that is in the end, which means they have already deducted out those that do not stay passed the the 1st yr freebie or the SFT point. Typically, there are @2500-3000 up for SFT. If 18% are scholarship than you are looking at 450-500 at SFT that were scholarship. Now when you add in those that walk after 1st yr., you are probably at 600.
~~~~ Meaning by my math of the original 900 awarded, it is more likely that 300 go USAFA, and the 600 go ROTC scholarship, than your position that 600 go USAFA and 300 go ROTC.
~~~~~ I think you are being a purist in your numbers...see above. If we ran your numbers, without recognizing many also apply to USNA, USMA, USCGA, USMMA, NROTC and AROTC, theoretically the amount on scholarship come fall maybe 100, and by the time they commission it might be 50 nationwide.
Finally, again AFROTC has the exact same rate as USAFA. It is @16-18%, not 10%. I think by talking to your friends that are C1C and C2Cs gives you a different outlook than had you talked to an AS300/400. IMPO they are saying that they got the scholarship, thus most get an appointment, but when you talk to ROTC scholarship candidates, the majority of them got the TWE, but did get the scholarship. 2 completely opposite opinions.
~ Many scholarship recipients reapply their freshmen year, and impo, they are the ones that I would say have a very high chance of an appointment for various reasons. One being a scholarship recipient, the 2nd being they now have a ROTC nom. on top of their MoCs, the 3rd being that they are a re-applicant. USAFA and MoCs like re-applicants.
~~ I have no idea what the actual breakdown is statistically between a 1st time and 2nd time appointment chance, but my guess is that the 2nd time rate is higher than the 1st shot applicant.
OBTW, AFROTC is selective, but impo NROTC is the most selective with AFROTC right on their heels.
Congratulations on your scholarship! My son just received a Type 7 AFROTC scholarship as well. He will not be converting to a Type 2, as he plans to attend an in state university. Both the award letter and the AFROTC website seem unclear as to whether a Type 7 covers tuition AND fees. The fees are almost as much as the cost of tuition, so I'm wondering if anyone knows if they are covered as well?
Call the AFROTC unit at the school. They will know the answer to that question. My own thinking is if fees are that high they may not all be covered but I'm not an AFROTC kind of guy. I would get the info from the horses mouth.
