Greetings,

I am a junior in high school. The purpose of this thread is that I wanted to obtain more information about the NROTC Marine Option scholarship. Specifically, I hope to gain some opinions from any of you about my current state right now, and any improvements I could do to be more competitive in the selection boards this upcoming fall.

Currently, my package looks like this:

Sports:
-Cross Country Varsity
-Waterpolo JV

Extracurricular Activities:
-Volunteer at local hospital (currently at 200hrs)
-Balintawak Eskrima Senior Instructor (doing this Filipino Martial Art since I was a kid and currently my part time job - love it and planning to teach it in the Marine Corps (if possible))
-Leadership in current class(11th grade)
-Nominated for Congressional Merit Award from local Congressman

Academics:
GPA - 3.6 (Unweighted) 3.8(Weighted)
ACT - 26 Combined
SAT - 1240 Combined (1600 scale)
ASVAB/ AFQT score - 91

PFT Score:
98 crunches
19 pullups
20 min12 sec - 3 mile run

Also I currently reside at 12th Marine corps district.
I am a naturalized U.S. citizen from the Philippines.

Sup bro,

The only thing I can think of is to bring your test scores up a bit. Other than that, your stats look awesome! 19 pullups is really good in particular !

To the OP:
I highly recommend that you request the administrator change your user name to something more anonymous and remove your name from the above post.
If you are fortunate enough to become a Marine Officer, you really do NOT want your subordinates (or superiors) to see your posts as a pre-NROTC cadet.

DS is a MO scholarship recipient. As already stated, try to improve your test scores, keep up your grades, and maintain your PT.

Here are a couple of other suggestions: apply as early as possible, make sure your package is complete for the early board, meet with the Officer Selection Officer or assigned local recruiter, and prepare for the interview.

Good luck!

Hey brother, I will do my best to improve my scores. Your reply is very much appreciated.

Your SAT/ACT scores definitely need improvement. I was impressed with your PFT score (I'm assuming everything was timed). Of course I'm preaching to the choir when I say you can improve those as well, with emphasis on the run time (talk to your cross-country coach... maybe work in some interval training). What you have might be good enough but it is a competition after all. It's hard to tell where you're at in leadership with the level of detail you provided (and I don't need to know). That would be another area you could focus on. Shoot for team captain on your teams... class president (since you already have a leadership role) etc. Be able to talk about what you actually did as a leader.

Just because you mention it, the Marine Corps has it's own Martial Arts Program, called MCMAP. You can find a lot of info if you google it. Belts and all. Once you commission they begin to teach you MCMAP stuff at your first school (The Basic School - TBS). My DS used what he learned there to disarm and immobilize a mugger who was trying to get his money and car keys while the mugger was using a knife. Not that I would necessarily recommend that, but it's very effective stuff.

Keep working hard... you have a good foundation to build upon.

I will do my best to improve my test scores and my PFT. And yes, I always time my pull-ups and runs all the time. (it really helped me in building my muscle endurance). As far as leadership.. I still have more opportunities to take on. Thank you for your reply and off to google MCMAP!

Smart to do some research on your own. You should think about how you could roll MCMAP into you interview (or application essay), combining your martial arts with MCMAP. It will show knowledge of the Marines and maybe why you would make a great Marine.
