Hey I am currently a Junior in high school and had a few questions about the admissions process for both West Point and the Naval Academy. First, if I apply before the start of my Senior year, will the colleges review information on the classes I take Senior year? Also, will they take those classes into account when considering me for admissions such as the grades of those classes and the classes themselves? For example, if I have taken an Honors English course this year and chose to take an Academic English course next year, would the colleges know that I switched from an Honors weight if I applied before the start of the school year? Would they get the grades? Would they care that I switched out of Honors? If I apply during the Summer, would I be able to add to my resume throughout the admissions process after my initial application?

Some parts of your application you update as you go.

The USNA application asks for what classes you will be taking senior year. Yet, if you don't mine me asking, why would you switch out of honors? Also the USNA will receive your senior grades at the end of the year when you graduate, they can also request your 1st semester grades of your senior year.

If you switch out of honors, go for GT if that is a higher level class offered in your school. If I were working in admissions I would be curious why switching to a lower level course if that's what it is. Your school profile that will be sent with your transcript will tell admissions what is available in your school.

The application asks for the classes you will take your senior year, so yes they will review that information.

Also, will they take those classes into account when considering me for admissions such as the grades of those classes and the classes themselves?
Yes they will take into account the classes you take your senior year.

They will know that you are taking Academic English in lieu of Honors English your senior year. You will report the classes you are taking and your guidance counselor will report what honors and AP classes are available at your school.

Would they get the grades?
Maybe, They may request your 7th semester transcript

Would they care that I switched out of Honors?
Honors English will carry more weight. If it will make a difference in your whole candidate score, only admissions will know. The most important academic scores are class rank and SAT/SAT scores.

If I apply during the Summer, would I be able to add to my resume throughout the admissions process after my initial application?
Yes you can supplement information, but it will be through your guidance counselor.

My school is smaller in size compared to other schools and offers a limited amount of classes in a limited amount of time slots so sometimes classes I would want to take that carry a higher weight just don't fit into my whole schedule.

JJ, how do they decide who gets what classes? Can you appeal?

I would take the hardest classes you can that fit in your schedule, and in the USNA application it will ask if you have any comments after each section, use the comments to explain why you couldn't take english honors and/or other rigorous courses.

It's not that the class is full it's just that the time slot of a specific class may be during the same time slot of another class that I am required to take or am more interested in taking so I may be forced to take the first class at a less weight during a different time slot to fit everything into the schedule. I can't appeal the master schedule.

My son encountered this problem, and was allowed to take some classes online in order to get the classes that he needed. Do they offer that option in your school district?

I'm not sure, but that is definitely something I should look into, Thanks!!

Hi Jr, Assume they will see everything. Just do your best and put every bit of effort in. That's all you have control of[emoji1303]

Definitely!! I will.

Hello, everyone. I found this thread and I wanted to bump it back up instead of start a whole new question on the matter cause there is great information here already. I am currently working on my app for the USNA, and on the current studies part I have put in all my classes no problem. What I do know is that there is a slight chance that I will switch a class from Bio Tech to Chemistry Honors next school year. None of that is solidified or anything, and I don't even know truly if I will. But in the case that I was dead-set on switching a class, and I had already submitted the Personal Information part, would I have to contact my Admissions counselor and tell them that I switched a class? Or would me sending them my transcripts throughout high school suffice? Just making sure because I don't want to turn in something earlier than I should have. Thanks for the help!

At the bottom of each application, there are the conditions you agree to when you submit. These include that you aren't pregnant, a father, everything is correct etc. One of those conditions is that you will notify USNA of any changes. You absolutely should tell USNA about any changes (I've encountered this issue already myself) and in my eyes, you are obligated to. Good luck!!

Frankly, better to be proactive ..tell them that you made the change rather than chance USNA discovering when they do your records review. It probably wouldn't hurt your application if you have a good reason (ie. small school with limited scheduling opportunities). Never heard of Bio Tech , isn't Chemistry Honors a step up in the program ?

Okay, I was planning on notifying of any changes in my planned future studies, so I will turn in that portion now, and notify them if I do plan on changing out of the class up to Chemistry Honors. Now Chemistry Honors at my school is mostly reserved for sophomores which is why I had to take Bio Tech even if Chemistry Honors was my main goal. I am unsure if I will switch or be able to, but in the case that I do I will ensure that I let my Admission Counselor know. Thanks for the replies I appreciate all that!

I actually was about to submit my Personal Data Record and stopped because when I clicked submit, it said something along the lines of, "Select 'Submit' to submit completed application to the United States Naval Academy." Just making sure, this is only the Personal Data Record. I don't even have nominations yet. Or is that not how it works? Can I submit this and still open up my candidate information page to see when my scores have been submitted and such like this? Just want to make sure that I don't do things preemptively.

Second, I took my SAT in May, and according to the College Board my scores were sent to the Academy since June 6th. It's been about 3 weeks since that time, and I am still told that my scores have not been received. I will try calling anyone I have to call to see if this is an issue or anything, but just wondering if this is common or do I have to be concerned.

Thanks all again for all the help!
